What for and why? Well, I have stayed out of this discussion but will leave you with these. I worked at the Columbia, Maine site and have been around it many times since. It has been shut down for years and is being torn down now. It actually only ran long enough to prove it worked. But they built 3 arrays a mile long at an ungodly cost.
The ULF was built and we were told of its existence because my Uncle lived in Southgate, Michigan. It was in a paper out there. It was supposed to replace existing communication methods with submarines. Which I grew up looking at, the most powerful radio station in the world along with its sister station in Australia and a smaller station in Adak, Alaska. That is the Cutler Naval Station and was what I spotted in the pictures that SteveZee put up from his home in Machiasport. Most don't know there are 26 towers there that are in 2 star patterns, the tallest at the center of each star is about 1000 ft.
Now, Cutler has been performing its duties since about 1960 or 61, but these others were built why? What was the end game? The point?
Nothing our Gov. does makes sense, and much is wasteful spending to justify a bigger budget next year.
