EFM made some very impressive stokers. Rotating pots, ash removal, automatic fines removal from the pot, ability to set the feed and air with a single lever, etc. Probably the largest collection of EFM conversion stokers is in a garage in Western Mass.
Van Wert also made some nice ones...up to 100 lbs per hr!
Yes, we got started on conversion stokers when we were thinking about buying our current house. We knew we wanted coal heat, but also wanted to make productive use of at least one of the two H.B. Smith/Mills boilers that already were in the house. We were fortunate to find a big EFM conversion stoker in nice shape that enabled us to power the central steam heat and, with a little improvisation, make DHW. Since then, in the course of looking for a backup unit and power for a possible separate DHW boiler, we have overshot the target somewhat.
I don't know about the "largest collection", but the garage is well populated with EFM's from 12.5 lb/hr and up. And a few Motor Stokors.
