Stoker type's

PostBy: Dave 1234 On: Wed Nov 20, 2013 7:42 pm

I really like the EFM 520 stoker mechanics. Its simple to adjust, its easy to lube, and very few moving parts.
Now please all the veteran stoker men don't flame me, but tell me about the more complex units that are out in the coal boiler world.
I see rotating pots, several nice ones. EFM, Wagner, ect.
Any thoughts ?
Or just several different ways to get the job done.

EFM made some very impressive stokers. Rotating pots, ash removal, automatic fines removal from the pot, ability to set the feed and air with a single lever, etc. Probably the largest collection of EFM conversion stokers is in a garage in Western Mass. ;)

Van Wert also made some nice ones...up to 100 lbs per hr!

Yes, we got started on conversion stokers when we were thinking about buying our current house. We knew we wanted coal heat, but also wanted to make productive use of at least one of the two H.B. Smith/Mills boilers that already were in the house. We were fortunate to find a big EFM conversion stoker in nice shape that enabled us to power the central steam heat and, with a little improvisation, make DHW. Since then, in the course of looking for a backup unit and power for a possible separate DHW boiler, we have overshot the target somewhat. I don't know about the "largest collection", but the garage is well populated with EFM's from 12.5 lb/hr and up. And a few Motor Stokors.

Very nice set-up's Mike and Ryan ! Why boilers are cool , I have no idea but they are. 8-)
So tell me about the reason for a rotating pot. ?
That is really the first stoker I ever saw and it sparked my interest in coal heat. As you all know, coal power left New England 50 or 60 years ago.

The reason for the rotating pot was to knock ashes off.

On mine the rotating pot sweeps ashes that have fallen off the pot into the ash removal auger. Inside the air chamber under the pot, I believe the rotation also moves accumulated fines toward the fines removal auger.
