Gentleman janitor GJ-52 only burning half pot

PostBy: bowers587 On: Thu Nov 21, 2013 11:01 pm

After firing up furnace this fall it is only burning half of the pot of coal. I had pulled the burner out and made sure there was no air obstructions, pulled the auger and reassembled with no luck I'm still burning half pot. Tried to slow the feed rate but that don't seem to be helping. Anybody have a clue what can be wrong?

did you check for fines under the tuyeres?

I had the exact same stoker. Is the coal entering the retort on that side and simply not burning, or, is the coal riding up one side of the pot and just ash sitting in the other?

if coal's entering and not burning, check the condition of the auger and make sure the auger is centered under the retort. Is your coal on that side pulverized at all?

Berlin... Yes coal gets poulverized a little bit... Auger is centered but no fines came out on th clean out... Pulled pot and chcecked everything out and pulled worm and it looks ok no flight wear.... Feed rate is turned down as low as we can get it too .... To no avail...... I I said maybe throw a 520 pot in it????

Check the auger pipes for corrosion, especially the pipe that goes into the bin. Excessive pitting inside the pipe will grind the coal.

if the pot auger is centered and the augers are good, your problem is (as was mine) a pitted bin pipe.

I wouldn't change the pot, I would just fix the coal pulverizing problem, I like the durable simplicity of the GJ stoker mechanism and the durabilty of the tuyere rings in GJ stokers over the tuyere plates in an efm (althoug I'm sure that statement is likely to start a war   )

We were gonna change the auger in pipe but didn't. Thanks a lot guys for your input. Gonna change pipe and give that a try. I'll update after I swap it out and let u know the results.

EFM's don't tolerate pitted feed pipes either.

Well changed the feed pipe and built a fire. After about an hour the fire was back to half pot . I have a spare pot with good worm in it. Just have to get it out. Gonna try swapping worm and see what happens. My house is coverd in very very fine black dust. It's out of control.

Did you maybe get some bituminous coal, by any chance?

If there is dust all over outside house there will plenty inside the burn-pot too.

Can you post a picture of a handful of your coal?

I would check the coal. I would also check to see if there is air pushing thru the blower. The GJ's have that thin sheet metal blower haousing that sometimes has to be replaced. You have checked the pot, the auger, the tubes. You haven't done anything to change the settings. I have heard about some hard starting /burning coal. Did you get your supply from the same place? If you did, you should check with others and find out if they are having the same problems. Good luck.

how about the fiberglass gasket at the top of the pot? Is it in good shape?

I burn Bit in my JG and it does fine, when I had the same problem you are it was a pitted bin tube, but you have fixed that!

Agreed. It would be good to try some different coal. One time I had a lopsided fire in my EFM and it was due to excess fines in the coal.

When getting to the *bottom of the bin*, so to speak, the fines get kinda concentrated at that point.
Best to not try and run that stuff thru any machine, unless fines are sifted out first.

Even after each good clean out of the pot, in short order it is plugged again due to still pushing more fines.

No air=No fire...fix the air problem. :)

I fixed the problem with an overhauled efm burner retrofit cost me 700+120 for some parts and about 3 hours of my labor. I have a few pics that once I transfer them to my computer I will post in a new topic
