Getting coal at Harmony

PostBy: WissaMan On: Mon Nov 25, 2013 4:39 pm

A friend of mine says it burns really well, down to fine ash. I normally get my coal in Bloomsburg and I really like those folks, but their coal does doesn't burn that completely. I figured I give UAE a try just to see the difference. I live about 1/2 hr from Mt Carmel.

My friend said they will load you with a front end loader. I have a 2006 Dodge Dakota with the extended cab so the bed I think is shorter than normal. I'm wondering if the bed is large enough for them to load it w/o coal falling outside the bed (or hitting the cab)

Can anyone comment on if they think I'll be okay getting my Dakota loaded there?

Thanks
WM

Anything not landing and staying in any truck bed you do NOT pay for. :D

But if it is your paint on the tailgate you're worried about, just drape 2 layers of a tarp over the tailgate and bumper and it'll be good. ;)

My Coal Delivery Guy doesn't use the company that has replaced the Harmony any longer he received complaints and was unhappy with his own use of it he now drives 11 miles farther to Keystone Anthracite in Girardville. I don't know much about Keystone's operation but the Coal burns nice. White ash and prolly a bit more of it than the Red Ash but that's life .

UAE uses a small Bobcat skid steer. The bucket is only about 5ft wide and they have a good operator (at least as of last time I was there), you won't have any issues. They load into small pickups all the time... wouldnt' hurt to stuff something under the tailgate so it doesn't leak through if your getting rice.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I should be fine w/ my Dakota.

I'm curious though about the concerns over the quality. Has the mine recently changed hands? How could that change the quality of the coal -- it's coming out of the same mine isn't it?

I live 15 minutes from Home Coal Sales (new name) and burn their rice coal all the time with no issues. It burns a bit hotter than Keystone Anthracite but not a whole lot. I live only a couple of minutes from Keystone Anthracite so unless I am driving right by Home Coal Sales I got to Keystone.

I buy it by the bucket from both places. Both will load you with a skid steer if your loading a truck. Both have a good supply of rice. Keystone Anthracite is $185 a ton bulk, Home Coal Sales is $170 a ton bulk. If you are buying bulk, Home Coal Sales at $170 ton is the way to go. :D

One day we will all learn that it is a conspiracy and all coal comes from the same mine. All BTU / ash content /red&white ash /strip vrs underground /shinny or dull grey is all hogwash. We are given different wrappers for the same product.

You obviously do not live in the coal region and have a very limited knowledge of the anthracite industry.
In 15 mins I can drive to at least 3 distinctly different mining operations.

You are correct Lewis, I know very little about the industry. I only have the option of reading coal from my local supply yard and have nothing to compare it to. That being said I have read good and bad about every coal company .

How do you like the Reading Coal your getting ? In the past I used to travel to the local breakers in my pick up and sample a ton. I've always liked Blaschak as did my father but I've burned a lot of different coals. Reading, Sherman, Superior, Harmony, Lenig. Now a days shoveling a ton and an afternoon of running around for it doesn't work so I use one of 3 local deliveries guy and trust in their recommendation us Coal Region folks can be a tough crowd so if he was selling crappy coal they'd have him back to pull it out of the bin. Haha I had a breaker owner do that already when I showed up in his office with a quart jar of pure nasty rocks from no more than 100 lbs of his coal I tried to burn in a hand fired stove. Even now trusting the load I still never take it more than a ton at a time just in case.
