I'm not the first to rip apart a perfectly good hearth, but it was too high for the installation of a V.C. 2310 that got from a friend of a friend (FREDDY), yes sir the man, the legend. ! could have come out beyond the hearth but then I loose some common area in the living room. I needed to make the six inch black pipe oval to fit in the throat of the chimney and a few strategically placed screws made me feel better. Don't change the channel, I will have pic's of the stove in all it's glory soon!

That's a lot of screws. I'm not sure I would have placed them on the seams either. Been doing this a long time and never seen a piece of that pipe come unlatched I just pop in two screws at connections.

i'll second the caution on the screws in the seam. i'll go as far as suggesting a new section of pipe.

I understand your point but the pipe needed to be oval to slide up the throat of the chimney and the pipe was very close to the shape when you snap it together so coming apart was a concern

Wow, that was quick! First just a hearth then a hearth with a stove. Wish my projects went that fast. Nice job. Stay warm Mike. Matt

Well to be honest I was having a hard time with it so I dropped my tools and drove down the street to the Holiday Inn Express and rented a room. :P No really I was ahead of the game and realized I had forgot to post the pic's of the hearth demo from last night, you know how it is with a new (old) stove...Christmas!, and without much sleep.

......she's a beast of a little stove, does everything as advertised so far this the forth hour  Very responsive, I have 2 windows open a couple inches in my living room 78,* 20* outside. When I can figure out how to take a decent picture of the coal bed I will post it, when I take one it looks like a dead fire, no girls bouncin' and a shakin' :(

Since you came aboard and explained the 404 I have not seen one closer than 200 miles, today I spotted one and refered it to Alfred it is in Windham, Me. about 199.9 miles away :( I figured if he was going to West Gardner he was alot closer to that. I am fairly high up and I would hate to make a 500 mile mistake! This stove I just put in fell in my lap and it had a good pedigry!

yep... its going to be great!

I just meant that I love to remember things about my dad and when I see people like you and me busting apart existing hearths or busting open vents above a fireplace opening, etc. it makes me remember my dad spending months measuring every hearth and fireplace along the east coast trying to make the perfect living room coal stove for "todays" houses & families ("today" seems to remain "today" 30+ years later every time I see someone busting apart hearths and placing stoves in the middle of the living floor toothy )... your going to do fine and we look forward to the pics with the lights off :punk:

and that referral was a winner (i hope he gets it, if I had any money at all I would have made that trip myself because its a bargain for sure).

Nice ma. A lil added safety with those screws in the seam will serve you well.
