Does the cover of the520 stoker mechanism , not the boiler jacket have any real world function other than dust avoidance and sound attenuation, I like mine open to observe the beauty of motion when the 520 is operating, my particular install place has no dust debris or other contaminants. I know there is decades of experience here. Thought I just fire up the forum a little

I think it is mainly for dust control and safety. It doesn't seem to do much for sound control.

I'm surprised at you guys. If you invert it, it will hold a couple of bags of ice and cold beverages for you and whatever guests you might invite to view the stoker in action. Isn't that in the manual anymore?

That's what the extra ash tubs are for. :D

...or you could follow my example and have a beer fridge next to the boiler.

My cover has never been installed, the boiler is too close to the furnace. It will have to wait until I get rid of the oil burner.

For one, it keeps abrasive coal ash dust from mixing with the oil that lubes the stoker. Since it was made before safety rules came into effect, I think it was done for beauty.
