I just read where the White House has about 55,000 Sq-ft. My first guess is about 55 lbs. of coal per HDD required. At 4,000 HDD's per year that would come to 220,000 lbs. of coal, or 110 tons needed per year.

$237/110 = $2.15 per ton

I wonder how close that would come to the price of coal in 1854. Given that the US Dollar has lost about 99% of its value since then, it's probably not too far off.

Whow... thats amazing when reduced to understandable numbers like that Larry

Its also amazing how this whole country ran on coal for 100 years back then from heating our houses to riding our trains to keeping the cowboys warm in the foothills out west. everyone knew what coal was, what it did and how it worked... now only 1 in 1000 know (and 90% of them live in PA) :( I will just never understand how & why we got so far away from coal as a necessity/"standard" (they must have been giving Oil away for free for a full generation to ensure all info would never be handed down to kids/grandkids before then Jacking the prices!).

It's averages out to about 1,200 lbs. of coal per day during the heating season, with perhaps 4,800 lbs. burned per day (that's 200 lbs. per hour) on the very coldest days of the winter. No electric stokers back then. They shoveled it in. Wonder if it was a steam boiler system? Wonder who did all the work?

But they did it on $237 per year (plus labor)! I wonder what the annual budget to heat the White House looks like these days.

1854 the white was very different than today, think of all the changes it has seen since. I would imagin at least one presidential advisor thought about some better insulation.

The British tried heating it for us by setting it on fire in 1812. :)

Too bad they weren't more successful. :D
