His cause was noble with respect to ending apartheid, but he was in fact (despite proclaiming that he never in fact personally joined the Communist Party) closely associated with communists throughout his lifetime.

I quote Wikipedia in just one instance (whereby this association with communism could be expanded to dozens of similar quotes):

"Although initially committed to non-violent protest, he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961 in association with the South African Communist Party, leading a sabotage campaign against the apartheid government."

As to being a terrorist, it is a matter of perspective. British history books label our Founding Fathers as terrorists, and in fact they were from the British perspective. I still recall my mom explicitly warning me (about 45 years ago when I was trying to decide upon which encyclopedia set to consult for some research I needed to do for a school project) not to use the Encyclopedia Britannica set for this very reason.

I tend to look more at what a more seasoned man has done than a young man. I do find it rather ironic that the supposedly free democratic nation would condemn his fight to end apartheid rather than try & influence the Gov. to end it. I guess as a young man you grab support where you can, if you look at it from their perspective they too were fighting for their freedom.

And that was just by the folks in D.C. :D

http://investigations.nbcnews.com/_news ... snhp&pos=8

From the White House to the halls of Congress, U.S. government officials have responded to the death of Nelson Mandela with a hail of testimonials to the late South African president’s leadership in the struggle for freedom and human rights.

Until five years ago, however, the U.S. officially considered Mandela a terrorist. During the Cold War, both the State and Defense departments dubbed Mandela’s political party, the African National Congress, a terrorist group, and Mandela’s name remained on the U.S. terrorism watch list till 2008.

Nelson Mandela's Passing seems to be anything but Peaceful.....Damned Shame,Really. In the End,I turn to look at what he helped accomplish in the daft times of just how Black South Africans were viewed and treated. Hell,I dunno, but I'd say that he and a few Folks from the Era are having a doozy of a relaxed conversation as I type this. As far as his activist affiliations of his Youth I figure only one thing-When your butt's up against a wall,Politics can really make some strange bedfellows. In the end,Mr. Mandela's Life was anything but easy, especially when it came to 'Ol Winnie. Kick'em up Mr.Mandela,Lord knows you've earned it.

Is it true that President Obama made no mention of Pearl Harbor, but he did instruct that our Nations flag be lowered to half mast in honor of Mandela (who is a foreigner)? is that the forced National equivalent of Obama's bowing in homage to foreign leaders?

I think he remembered to ask for the flags to be lowered (which should be automatic), as for a foreigner it's been done before.

The South African Communist Party bids it's farewell to Comrade Mandela.

http://www.workers.org/articles/2013/12 ... n-mandela/

I quote a small snippet:

"At his arrest in August 1962, Nelson Mandela was not only a member of the then underground South African Communist Party, but was also a member of our Party’s Central Committee. To us as South African communists, Comrade Mandela shall forever symbolize the monumental contribution of the SACP in our liberation struggle. The contribution of communists in the struggle to achieve the South African freedom has very few parallels in the history of our country. After his release from prison in 1990, Comrade Madiba became a great and close friend of the communists till his last days."

What would any of them be if not for a carefully crafted media message? Mandela, Mother Theresa, Khadafy, take you frigging pick. It is the media that makes and breaks celebrity/notoriety. We the sheep must have villains and hero's to make us lurch to and fro and distract us from reality.

Kevin

I have heard much lately about the circumstances in SA and not much has changed, just new faces in charge.

Hero and villain, patriot or terrorist depend on which end of the gun you're looking at.
