Hand Fed Coal Stove: Warm Morning 523

Post by ndk114 » Sat. Dec. 07, 2013 9:03 pm

Hi everyone,

Just moved into my new house in April and have a coal stove that I've been using now for a few weeks. Tonight I was shaking my stove, and the shaker fell off of the grate. This has happened before, but tonight all of the coal proceeded to fall out when it happened. Any advice on how I can keep this from happening in the future?

Thanks!

Could be a broken grate or support tab or they could be warped and not laying in the tabs first thing to do is tear it down pull the grates and floating supports and clean all the ash out of the corners and such keep your eyes open for something obvious.

Berlins post on that above thread was one of the best I ever saw!
anyways... Lewis is right...you need to shut er' down anyways and clean it out and remove the grate so we can see what were dealing with.

I had that same problem a few years back. The grate ring wore out after 25+ years and the round grate would fall right through to the ash pan. I tried to get a replacement grate ring but I had no luck. Getting parts for the 523-R was a pain in the neck. That is when I made the change to the Buck Model 24 Coal Stove and I am glad that I did. I just hope I can get that many years out of the Buck Model 24.

Thanks! I'll check it out. Do I need to do anything special to remove the grate? Or does it lift right up?

I could be wrong but I think the firebrick set on top of the grate ring. They may have to be removed before you can get the ring out. I don't have the 523 so I can't even check it for you. Maybe another member who burns the Warm Morning 523 can chime in and give you a little more information.
