Too Many Non Contributory and Off Topic Posts

PostBy: Richard S. On: Sun Dec 08, 2013 10:28 pm

I'm not concerned about the forums like the coffee forum but in the coal forums I'm seeing too many posts that are not contributing to the thread. Unless you have some information to add please refrain from posting in them. People come here to get information and discuss things and they shouldn't have to wade through a bunch of posts that don't add to the discussion like a post just containing smilies or comments unrelated to the topic. If you want to chat use the coffee forum, that's what it is there for.

Makes sense to me...

Especially in light of the fact that you have other headings on the site that specifically invite other posts and comments. As for me, I turn to this forum on a daily basis for additional information. I now have my son starting and maintaining my coal stove when I'm out of town...which makes me a proud Poppa since my reason for inquiring all along was for long enough burns to not have to involve my sons in the process.

I have shared this forum with my friends across FB, and implore them to read any comments if they're considering a coal stove. I don't imagine anywhere on this planet a better place for outstanding firsthand recommendations and personal help..

THANK YOU again for creating this site...it is on my desktop for easy access.

some of us do use this forum as much for its information, assistance & knowledge base as we do as a social forum and true enough the lines sometimes get crossed and a good reminder for those of us who socialize for laughs & fun to try and keep that off the knowledge base threads. Your probably going to have to remind me once per year... but i know you will! ;)

So if someone other than the original poster states a fact in a thread that I'm curious about, but it doesn't relate directly to the topic, am I not suppose to inquire about it publicly in the thread? Or should I send them a private message?

and, would it be ok for someone to be supportive even if the their post doesn't offer additional information or inquiry to the thread topic? I didn't quite understand where the line in the sand is on this... :?

Sorry, not trying to be difficult  just don't wanna be an outlaw

that's actually a very good question  a lot of times a topic can start out as one thing and then lead down a road to other things (example: "Base Burner restoration"... as the thread goes for weeks/months it leads to talk about someone else finding a bargain or their wonderful trip to Barnstable stove shop on cape cod or how wonderful that drill press is in the photo's of the resto... "OMG your drill press is rare, where d you get it!"

These are tricky area's and I dont think any hard N fast rules are being imposed, I think Rich is just reminding us to do our best to be aware and use our own judgement to try not to go off the "deep end" so to speak? thats a guess anyways... Rich has never been one to control topics or conversation but rather try his best to just keep us from "going off the deep end".

Topics wander and I understand that. What I'm talking about is the smiley posts and the other short chit chat type posts that is non related.

As far as your question use your judgement, a lot of great information gets buried in non related topics and it's hard to find. If the question has value for discussion start a new topic.

I know that I am a big culprit on the smiley issue & will cease & desist for the most part, even though they were pretty much all sent in a positive feed back mode with narrative on 90% of them. God I'm having problems getting around all the advertisements in the middle of a lot of the topics--oh well, money is as money does. Kinda makes me wonder what to post & where it's OK to post it-- Oh well, I'll figure it out. I regress! OK, just read the above post.

There is actually less ads on the forum than there was before because topic pages with less than 12 posts only have one. Previously if you had more than 50 posts you just didn't see them. The ads were moved down more to move content up the top, it was too cluttered.

At this point in time this just an experiment to see if they perform better.

I know there is a need for them, but personally, I find them more distracting towards the specific topic then my smiley trade mark  toothy I'm sorry, I couldn't resist ;)

I agree, It's a big distraction having ads between the posts

Richard, Thank you for the answer. I'll try not to sway topics off course. This is the only forum I've been a member to so, always learning :D
