STOP THE PRESSES, BOYS!!! There's a free Iphone App that will calculate CFM with only entering duct size and shape and pressure readings. As soon as I get a chance I'll gather some data!!!

How will you get the pressure readings? With a pipe extension on the face of the barometric??

You need to use a pitot tube, essentially a 90 bend on a piece of tubing attached to my manometer tubing. I will drill 3 holes, 60 degrees apart around the t pipe the baro is in. Slip the probe in the pipe and read the manometer reading for the draft coming from the Baro into the smoke pipe. The app requires several readings at several depths into the pipe and at each of the three holes that are 60 degrees apart. Might not get to it tonight,....but I will!

Sounds interesting.

Can you post what/where the app is too ?

Thanks C12. That app should make for some more interesting numbers to compare.

Fred,....I still may resort to a 60 gallon garbage bag inflated and taped over the baro while I time how long it takes to deflate! That will work,....in theory, of course.....

I'm thinking Fred and Larry are wishing you guys would take the garbage bag and tape it tightly around your necks after putting it on over your heads!
Any measurement will have to be averaged as the baro moves all the time unless it is dead calm or pinned wide open with a gale. Open a door? baro changes. Turn on the bath fan? baro changes. As many devices as we have today, I am amazed that a make up air vent is not required in new housing. Boiler rms do in commercial jobs. If I turned on my dryer, by 2 bath vents, and the range hood, along with the central vac, it might suck a window in somewhere. That is leaving out a heating appliance that is sometimes power vented. It all must come in, somewhere. How to achieve it is the question? My take on that would be use your app and find out the average flow, find the average outside temp that is being drawn in, and calculate how much coal is burned to bring that air up to the temp at the baro, as that is the air being sucked out.

I've been perusing the literature (operating manuals) from several of the major coal stove manufacturers, and every one I saw recommended a barometric damper. Only one suggested the use of an MPD as a viable alternative.

remember the manuals are written with lawyers there. Someone might put the manual damper over the baro and die of CO, then a survivor sues the stove maker. Which one mentions the MPD? Chubby does I know, even in videos both are used. And I thought Hitzer does. My Nestor Martin/Surdiac does.

Yep - both manuals for the Mark I & III said NEITHER. Harman is big (or was big), and they're "lawyered up" to the max.
