Round Oak D 18

PostBy: jackpine On: Sun Dec 15, 2013 7:51 pm

I have burned wood in this stove for 30 plus years. Good tight stove.

Located a source for a coal grate, pot and rim castings. Any tips on firing this stove would be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome JP to the end of your search for coal burning information. I think I know what stove you are talking about but a picture is worth a thousand guess's. And how is that part of the country???

To convert this to coal you have to take out the register plate for wood burning and put the coal grate in. And insert the cast iron liner. I would also recommend that you line the fire pot with refractory cement. If you do the fire pot will last forever.
Does the stove have an ash pan? If not you can have one made from any sheet metal shop.
This is a very large stove as I'm sure you are aware.
Using coal as fuel will make it seem like a different stove. You will get hours upon hours of even, steady heat.
Do you have any pictures of the grate and liner?

Stove does not have an ash pan, rather a ash pit.

I will post up pics of coal insert parts after I pick them up on Tuesday night.

If the stove doesn't come with an ash pan. Have one made, trust me. You want an ash pan.

I second that. An ash pan or even two is a must.

If you don't mind jackpine, where did you get the parts, I have a Round Oak 20 that's in bad shape & I was thinking about scrapping it out for some of the parts but if I can get parts it may be worth it to get a new barrel rolled, weld the cracks & fab a liner for it.

Samhill,

I got my parts from Roger Raagatz, Pardeeville, WI. 608-429-9267. When I was searching for parts, I spoke to someone that had parted out a RO 20, but don't recall who that was. List of contacts is below.

I would not recommend welding a fire pot, rather find a different one in good shape.
