Blaschak bagged rice sizing - a couple BIGGUNS slipped thru!

PostBy: SMITTY On: Thu Dec 19, 2013 9:40 am

For the second time in 2 days, I've discovered STOVE sized coal in my bags of rice!

The first time I happened to notice the big one roll out from the bag I was emptying. This last one pictured I found just before heading to bed. I let the hopper run real low, just to make sure all the fines and clumped coal were making it thru the paddle. When I looked inside, that pic is what I saw! Holy crapper! Glad that didn't get wedged in the paddle! Probably would've broke something for sure.

This chunk looked just like a black diamond. REALLY shiny, and glass-like. When I busted it up with pliers, shards came out that could easily cut you, just like glass. Interesting ...

Just curious if anyone else runs into this with rice (since this is my first foray with the stuff) coal of any brand. :?:

I've found some pieces about large almond sized in my bulk Blaschak rice but nothing anywhere near that size! Yikes! Somebody has a hole in their screen. Maybe it's like a Wonka Bar with the winning ticket,.....find the lump of stove coal and you could win the factory

It happens...good reason to make a staging bin with a screen. Dump the coal through a screen, and give it a few days to dry before you put it in the hopper.

I think I'm just going to pour them in a bit slower so I can see if a biggun tries to sneak in there.

What I've been doing is opening 4 bags in advance, and leaving them close to the boiler to dry them out. Helps alot, especially those bags closest to the floor - they were absolutely dripping with water. Now when I pour them in, the coal is just damp instead of sopping. That I can deal with.

That biggun' you found SMITTY is making up for the lb of powder I was getting with Blaschak 'nut a few weeks ago. I find there quality control has gone south this year. I have been buying Reading pea and it all good knock on wood :bang: :)

I never found anything approaching that size! She's a Biggun!
I am still working my bulk UAE pile. I got a mix of 50/50 Rice/Buc. All sized correctly.

I have been having the same problem with the bagged blaschak rice but not that big . I dump mine in wheel barrow overnight to let it dry some before useing so that is how I have been able to find them .

Just found this one today, from bagged Blaschak rice.

It's in my "Spoke too soon!" FIXED thread.

My pusher bar has always merrily crunched away...but I know this one has been in there a week, hope it didn't cause any damage. Stove runnin ok so far.

Yo, Smitty, Take and make a frame and put 1/2" screen on it so it will lay over the hopper and pour the bags thru it .

I've found just the opposite , I bought 4 tons of Nut and the majority of it has been Pea size. Next year I'm ordering Stove. This little stuff is a pain to deal with for me , it messes up my air flow

When I burned nut in my hand fired, I found both Blaschak and Kimmel's to be both over and undersized, some with piles of fines in there too.

They get handled quite a bit before they end up in my basement - it's a 5 hour ride from the mine to the dealer .... then whatever the dealer does with them ... then trucked to my house ... then fed by hand into the basement and stacked - lots of handling! My Mark III didn't much care, although I had a harder time getting the fire going good with the smaller sizes, due to draft.
