And there isn't any REMOTE CONTROL??? You guys are slipping!
I was considering a wireless remote for mine since my vac is located in a closet about 20 feet away from the stove.

I'm in the process of building a concrete block wall to divide the basement creating a separate furnace room and finishing off the remainder of the basement for my long awated man cave.
I plan to dress up my coal bin and make it appear to be a fake fireplace.

Since im already confused with the number of remotes existing in the house I ran a switch next to the hopper to control the receptacle for the coal vac and one next to it for my ash vac.

Snorkels, remotes, Fireplace facade coal bins, indicator lights, coal vacs, suspended vac barrels....you guys bring a tear to my eye! :D

Very helpful pics and videos, thanks. Where do you connect the other side of the snorkel, or is it open to atmosphere?

Nice setup Paulie! Neat wiring, switches, etc. I like it.

I've read a number of threads on the coal vac and even shown the videos to friends, but just now getting to where I can use one. Brought my boiler online this past weekend, still working on zone plumbing and stuff.

This is the shop vac I have now and am planning to buy another one today so this first (now dirty) one can be dedicated to heating uses- coal, soot, ashes, etc.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-16-gal-Wet-Dry- ... /100638360

We are remodeling, so do not want to chance mixing this stuff with my paint, drywall, etc. You get the idea.

Things I like about this vacuum is 6.5hp, very quiet for a shop vac, HEPA filtering, can add extra "drywall bags" for fine particulates (like soot, coal dust, etc), and 203 CFM

They have other Rigid vacs that look similar for less, but the CFM is less.

I researched quite a bit when I selected this shop vac for drywall and remodeling. Thought it might be helpful to those looking to make coal vacs. It's listed at $159

Thanks CCW ..... The end of the snorkel is just vented to atmosphere.

Make sure you use a drywall bag in your vac. Your hepa filter will block up really quick without it.

Some members are using a dust deputy before the vac with good results. Hopefully they will see this post and offer their expertise.

Get working on it and post some pictures ........ Winter is almost over :yearight:

I ordered a couple of vibrator motors (yes, that is what they are called) normally used for massage style chairs to try out with my build.

I am thinking that if strapped to the feed pipe, it will help the coal move and avoid packing and jamming of the coal.

I didn't see anyone else try it yet, but if they work they are something like $8-$12 on fleabay, DC and almost no amps so thinking plug in type transformer.

They aren't here yet, but Stay tuned!

Well, we started our Coal Vac build today. Here is a link to the post in my full build/install thread.

What to Do With an Afternoon and a Few Hundred Bucks?

Think I missed how you guys were connecting your shop vac hoses to the 2" conduit?

Well, here in our little corner of Cecil-Tucky we don't think any project is done until the appropriate amount of duct tape has been used! So the vac hose end fit wasn't tight in the 2" 90* but the duct tape and zip tie have done the trick!

Looks like you have the big end of the hose there. I have a shop vac coupler, I'll have to check and see if that will fit better.

I have all kinds of duct tape! If the coupler doesn't work, maybe I'll duct tape it to the pvc, then I can still remove the shop vac for other duties :)

Thanks, guys!
