What do I have here?

What do I have here?

PostBy: jpete On: Fri Dec 27, 2013 8:46 pm

A friend has a daughter who lives in an old Victorian house that has a ton or two of this stuff in the basement. He told me it is coal but it clearly isn't. She gave some to another coal burner and he said it wouldn't burn.

It's silvery, porous and lighter than anthracite. Is it coke? Or railroad ballast?

It's silvery. Like it was sprayed with paint.

Would it be magnetic if it was iron pyrite?

And why would anyone have a ton of it lying around?

This stuff doesn't appear to be even a little magnetic.

I think I might throw a small shovel on top and see what happens.

Damn near reminds me of slag. I've got no clue why you'd be storing anything like that in the basement. The answer to this Mystery oughta be a real doozy! :gee:

Do you suppose it is coke from a natural gas process some 80 years ago? I have seen this kind of porous black/gray rock before, and I have 8 tons of it in barrels in the shed.
Try to burn it, It will fire right up if it is coke.....and the question will be answered. The NG process from days of old used to strip or burn off the volatiles and leave this product, while creating NG. If it is light in weight, like charcoal, you may well have found out your answer.

I just put a large piece in my stove and cranked the air up a bit. If it is going to burn, I'll know shortly. If it isn't, I didn't want to chance putting too much in there.

Weird. I put a "stove" size piece in there about an hour ago and opened the air up to 1.5 turns. I've got blue ladies 6" tall all over the place but this rock is just barely turning dull red on the bottom of it and if I take it out of the fire, quickly goes back to black.

It's almost like a tile from the space shuttle or something.

Looks like coke. It will burn with very little flame...throw a few shovels in and watch the stove temps.
