Batten down the hatches Ohio! Cold weather on the way!!!

PostBy: lsayre On: Wed Jan 01, 2014 7:47 am

The Accuweather forecast for Wadsworth, OH is projecting a low of -12 degrees on the night of Monday the 6th, and following on the heals of that the high for the day on Tuesday the 7th will be -2 degrees, with a low of -3 degrees. These below zero temps are the projected actual temperatures, and not wind-chill temps. Imagine what the wind chill will be on these two days!!!

My HDD's formula is telling me that I will be burning 105 lbs. of coal on the 6th, and 108 lbs. on the 7th. A good test for the AHS S130 Coal Gun.

The Upper State NY and across on over into Maine guys will likely yawn at these mundane low temps, but for Ohio -12 degrees is getting well down there. The record low for the Medina/Wadsworth, OH area was -26 degrees in 1994.

I've had mine set at 175 degrees for the entire heating season to date. Wonder if its worth bumping it to 180 degrees, or if perhaps I should go a tad higher than that? I only have enough feet of HW baseboards in all of the zones of the house and garage combined to deliver about 77,000 BTU's to the house at 180 degrees going out and 160 degrees returning. The only way I can increase this would be to go higher than 180 degrees. But the heat loss calculations I have ran come in at just about 77,000 BTU's when I use -20 degrees as the design temp (though I now know that the typical design temp criteria for this area is only zero degrees), so it might be OK for me to just leave it at 175. ??? In the end I guess that if the house can't hold 69 degrees I can always crank it up. My 22.7 KW resistance boiler used to struggle a bit to keep up in temps like this, and 22.7 KW is 77,450 BTU's.

I think I'm going to bring my lawn mower batteries into the house, those temps will most likely freeze them solid & crack the case. :(

The night of the 6th has been revised to -16 degrees, and the night of the 7th has been revised to -4 degrees. The forecasts keep getting colder as these two days approach us!!!!

While I was out getting my batteries I took the time to start my generator & let it run a bit while checking it out. Better find a problem if any before you might need it. ;)

It is -14 now and expected to to go lower before morning. Was -23 this morning and i did up the WL110 to 185 maybe should go to 190 as it is going pretty steady, and temp. having a hard time to stay at 70 . North of me but still in Maine it went down to -42 and that was not wind chill readings . The wind is going to pick up before morning so it is going to be very cold here tonight. 60 miles north of of me they came within 2 degrees of setting a record as it stayed -14 or lower for a complete 24 hrs. as far back as records have been kept in this area , I believe they mentioned 75 years . This must be part of that global warming .

Life's good ! Snowing, down to 10* and the wind has been up. Got about a foot of new snow, lets see what comes on the overnight. Drifting's expected to be a problem, but we're used to this in the Snowbelt. All the Newbies that have moved in in the last 4-5 years are finally getting a taste of what the Snowbelt means. We've got it good compared to others in the Northeast. You're right,Larry. Folks around here aren't used to what's coming Monday thru Wednesday. :fear:
