I finished off the month of December at 1,734 lbs. of coal burned. There were 1,083 HDD's here for the month of December. If I take off 140 lbs of coal to account for our DHW for December, that leaves 1,594 lbs. for heating the house. 1,594/1083 = 1.47 lbs burned per HDD.

For December of 2012 we had 908 HDD's, and I went through 1,303 total lbs. of Harmony pea (for both heat and DHW). That shows me that the Harmony packed appreciably more heat than Blaschak. Roughly 11.6% more BTU's per pound, if such is possible.
For December of 2011 we had 931 HDD's, and we burned through 1,568 lbs of Blaschak. I currently seem to be doing somewhat better than that.

I used 1640 lbs. with 1336 hdd , that's for heat and dhw for 2 people or 1.23 lbs/hdd for both . I am heating a 23 yr. old small cape ( 24 by 36 ft. ) but in an open very windy area . I am burning blaschak rice.

Yes, that is where the HDD's (heating degree days) come in.RAYJAY wrote:Larry do you have the out side temp figured in on your usage ? is been the coldest in Dec in a long time

Daily HDD's = 65 - (days high temp + days low temp)/2RAYJAY wrote:ok how do you figure a hdd
Or another way of looking at them is:
Daily HDD's = 65 - the days mean temperature

Well up here we had 1462 HDD and just loaded bag #32 or 1280 lbs = .876 lbs/ HDD. This is the first season using zero heating oil, but I have a stove in the living room and not trying to heat the house from the basement.
