What's your temp?

What's your temp?

PostBy: CoalisCoolxWarm On: Tue Jan 07, 2014 12:07 am

Some people don't think coal is the 'in' way to heat. I beg to differ. The fancy heat pumps aren't very good below 30F and I think they actually start crying in this 0F and below weather.

So let's do something interesting with this cold snap:

Fellow coal combusters, What is your outside temperature and What is your inside temperature?

11:00pm in woods of Western PA
Outside: -5F on the thermometer
Inside: +74F
Windchill according to news sources (how do you measure this?) about -25F

Let the smoke fly!

Outside = -5 and wind howling. Inside = 73 through out. Thermostat set points = 74. Boiler temp = 180. EDIT: Here's an 8:00AM Update. Outside = -8 and wind gusting at times. Inside = 73 through out. Same thermostat set point. Boiler temp = 175. All three heat zones have been continuously circulating all night. So there you have it; The Kaa-2 is near, or at it's limit. Although still maintaining 73* inside, when outside temp dropped from -5* to -8*, boiler temp dropped 5*. Like I said, the Kaa-2 is running flat out. All three zones are circulating. I still know I can increase the stoker feed at least one turn. If I remember correctly, any more than one turn, hot coals would be getting pushed off the grate.

Wind chill outside right now here in 'da U.P. eh? is -45degF! Inside our 2500sqft ranch the temp is 72 in the great room, and 68 farther away down the hallway where the bedrooms are located. Coal rules! Heat pumps and pellets can't compare in these temperatures.

Girardville Pa.

outside -4.9
wind 17 mph
wind chill -23

inside living room at 68
stove at about 90% burning Keystone Anthracite

Even if by some freaky thing we lose power we have a Bucket a Day in the basement piped into the disconnected oil boiler sending hot water to the bathroom radiator on the second floor. It's keeping the upstairs bedrooms at about 63-64.

Burning black rocks and loving it.

We're only minus 4.

When I came down it was 67 in the kitchen with the range damped down for the night.

Wind's making it minus 20 coming from the S.S.W. That's over Fred's way. I'm sure it would be colder here if it weren't for all the heat from Fred's stove upwind of us ! Thanks Fred, ! :D

Weather like this it's sure nice to have a coal stove. And, it's even nicer to have people upwind with bigger coal stoves ! :D :D :D
