Which was/is the best underfed stoker?

I am successfully burning BIT (Pea Stoker Size) in a Gentleman Janitor GJ-63 designed for anthracite. But I understand I have very good quality Bit coal. As far as wood pellets I would only guess the air would have to be turned way down to keep them from blowing out of the pot. I have no desire to find out.

I've got the Alaska unit and have burned both pellets and coal in it. Both burn completely. Coal obviously puts out more heat but I'll bet the pellets would be able to put out enough btus to keep my house heated. I've got just under 1500 sqft.

I'm not sure where Whistlenut is coming from, but there is a fines cleanout on it. The plate on the bottom of the burn pot - just above the ash pan - comes off and the fines come pouring out.

I posted some data a while back comparing the usage of pellets vs coal. See the thread here http://nepacrossroads.com/about25857.html

A deep pot like the allen or van wert stokers will burn bit best, EFM will also, but the auger size is too small and, in my opinion, there's a few other things that make it slightly less desireable than the deeper pot, ringed tuyeres, and large auger tubes of other underfeeds such as the two I mentioned. For bit coal to work in an unmodified non-clinkering type underfeed stoker it will have to have one qualification - a coke button of less than 2, w/ 0 being ideal.

A clinkering type underfeed will burn both anthracite and bituminous coal (such as will-burt s-30, s-20 or even a combustioneer) but, you MUST only give the coal enough air to burn smokeless (w/ bit coal) when under fire and you need to have slow, lazy fire with a much bigger pile of burning coal if you use that stoker w/ anthracite; not a problem, but, if you give them too much air the tuyeres will burn out rapidly. If you give them the proper amount of air, the tuyeres and heavy duty design of most clinkering stokers will last many many decades.

Does this qualification apply equally to non-clinkering type underfeed stokers that have rotating pots vs. fixed pots (with or without ash cutters)?

without heavy modification of the pot and/or ash slicers and to achieve reasonable % of unburned coal in ash, yes. I'm in the process of heavily modifying an allen stoker to burn mid/high coke button coal, (it works with expensive low coke button eastern KY stoker as is when well tuned) I'll tell you how it works out in few months.

Berlin, I guess im lucky with my coal, checked the lab report on it and it was not tested for coke button, you are right about the air, mine burns much better with the air turned way down.
