If we didn't build Apple computers and components in Malaysia, then they would have to come to us! Apple computer exists because of our 'WANTS'. Those high tech people would be better off inventing new technologies that could, for instance, make cars more efficient (woefully inefficient today) by using diesel technology, home heating systems more efficient, foods more wholesome and safer eliminating obesity, better types of insulation, better, longer lasting highway paving materials,......... The list is endless! These are all things that are NEEDS, not WANTS. Instead of a GPS for your wrist, invent something truly useful. Instead of parking thousands of 'thinkers' behind desks designing some trinket, release them to do something worthwhile. Sure it's hard to let people go but look what's happening today by not having jobs because they are all overseas.

What point is there in making more efficient cars? Cars are a want. You don't need a car. Take the bus, ride a bike or walk.

Who gets to say what is "worthwhile"?

A tablet computer like an iPad is a "trinket" for you but for me, it's how I get my schedule for work. I know what I'm doing a month before I do it. I can record information on equipment I'm working on. If I need tech support, I can go online and look for what I need. I can take a picture and email it to the office or another co worker to help me out if I need it.

Is an iPad a "need" or a "want"?

Could I be an HVAC tech without it? Sure, but it's a lot easier with it than without.

How do you expect manufacturers to survive in the U.S if their products arent bought?? Thats a horrible way to live life worried about my job drieing up. I agree plan for a temporary loss of employment is smart but I'm sorry, I am smart enought that I learned a skilled trade. I could leave my job for another or another if I chose too, I just been at this one for about 10yrs now. The job market is huge...thats if you have the RIGHT set of skills.

The manufacturers just have to get smart about WHAT they make and HOW they market it, which was my earlier point that evidently went unnoticed. I was in the plastics engineering field for 38 years with Naval Sub service before that so I had a marketable skill as well but too damn old and ornery (in case you didn't notice :D ) to put up with the corporate BS now. So I sit here watching my savings dwindle as I can no longer live on the interest since we see fit to artificially keep the interest rate at almost zero so no one notices that we've exploded our national debt by seeing what we would have to pay in interest on it if the rate were realistic. Also, the unending printing of money makes what money I DO have worth less and less each day. Sure I'm mad. Mad at EVERY free loading leech in D.C. that only cares about buying votes and making more money under the table while you and I can or won't do anything to stop them.
If the job market is so huge, then what's the answer to putting people into those jobs and off of staggering unemployment rates of up to 40% for young blacks, a true overall rate of 17%, and a record number of people living in poverty and on food stamps?

We have a modified version of Watson at the college I work at. Supposed to help solve many questions that our sciences have created. Thinks more like a mind than a computer.

Interesting. I guess I assumed it was running on very specialized hardware, but I suppose it can work on another platform, only slower maybe.
Are there any online links you can post from your college, as to how Watson is being used?

What is going to happen is a massive economic paradigm shift. The Dollar will lose its world reserve status and will be unhitched from oil. When that happens we will be reduced to an isolated, secondary status in the World.
The Chinese and others will buy land very cheaply here and put up factories to hire Americans to work at slave wages in them. We will have no other alternative unless our Societies value system is completely reversed as well as our current economic and foreign policies. I don't look for that to happen.
The fiat currencies of the West are doomed and our economy is doomed along with them.

Can you cite some reputable mainstream economists who support that view and can explain why and how they expect it to come about? No sensationalist bloggers, please, no salesmen hyping the future of gold as an investment -- just some serious economists with established credentials.

I don't think mainstream economists make the most reliable predictors since they are largely responsible for the current mess. Peter Schiff is one non mainstream economist who has been accurate in his predictions and in general agrees with the direction of Williams post.

The uncoupling of the dollar and oil is already happening between Iran and China.

Just plain common sense should tell anyone with half a working brain cell that, if you spend 17 TRILLION dollars you don't have & continually print money to make even more debt, eventually, the whole thing is going to come crashing down in a big, messy pile.

The big question that nobody can agree on ... or really even predict, is WHEN.

Most if not every country on earth spends money they don't have any backing of other than good faith. As a Petro Dollar you could almost say it was backed by oil even if the oil wasn't ours. If our money wasn't being kept out of circulation then they wouldn't have need to print so much. Remember the pallets full of shrink wrapped bills that were found in Iraq & then many were ah misplaced, just think if every oil producer is the same & not to mention the tax free safe havens where profits are hidden until a tax break is given to return them. Until we once again start investing in this country & manufacturing & exporting goods instead of importing not much is going to change. Money earned & spent here circulates here. :o
