Eight scoops now, I figure that's enough.
It stinks!
Another pic for you Nortcan.

Ok...decided to finish what I started.
Watching the Giants & burning paint!
Check out the crazy good numbers in the pics
OAT = 70*
Draft = .08
Primary open 1/4
Secondary closed
MPD closed
Check closed
I think I'm going to have to use the check when it gets cold!

Wow ! .08 with the MPD closed. You may need two check dampers to slow that one down,
Paul

Suck it AL29 liner haters!Sunny Boy wrote:Wow ! .08 with the MPD closed. You may need two check dampers to slow that one down,

That's read after the MPD, but before the 90* turn up the chimney, with a Bacharach "Draft Rite" hand held gauge.
Maybe the Dwyer is more accurate?
I guess it's just chimney draft, not the draft applied to the stove.
I'll drill another hole before the damper after the game.

Nice. Glad I'm not the only one getting anxious and lighting off. Wish I didn't have work. Would really like to sit and enjoy the Stanley with my book. Oh well. Take care. Matt

Yes I agree.. it's more usable information if you measure the pressure of the stove.. doesn't really matter what the chimney is doing..
Putting the mano before the MPD will help you with setting it.

Thanks Matt! You will be warm in front of your stove in no time. I know what it's like to work weekends. Yesterday was a hard 12 hour side job.
Lee....I think I'm gonna wait till the stove is cold before I drill on the stack. Next report will have stove draft and chimney draft posted.
She's about 3/4 full, I'm going to let it run overnight.

The stove will settle down once it gets an ash layer in it. That makes a big difference. In the fall and spring you simply need to figure out how much ash to keep in it. You'll figure it out.
Also the check damper should be able to knock that barrel temperature down in a hurry.

Good point William.
I never looked at it that way and it explains a lot.
Before I returned the No. 2 to the "Hospital," I blew it out in my driveway with my backpack leaf blower, to minimize ash in the van and to make life a little easier for Brandon.
I must have done that for a good five minutes before ALL the ash came out. This is in addition to using the ash vac every week or so during the winter.
Good thing I had a paint mask/respirator, my neighbors must have thought I'm a lunatic!

Hmm I'm thinking that is THE protocol for a base heater. Those passageways do get really blocked up, my BB Red cross Garnet 48 was totally choked when I bought it and hey thought they had cleaned it. Disconnect, take it outside, leaf blower, blow in soda like Nortcan did with his air gun, damp rid, wrap it up and wait until fall to reinstall. PITA but that is how you start the season clean. Or keep the Hitzer 50-93 running, put in a fake light in the BBs and gaze at it all winter. Nah, William would have a fit and I would get hate mail forever.I must have done that for a good five minutes before ALL the ash came out. I have been gazing at my Wings impatiently all summer and the fake Calumet light is a riot. Shelley is now giving me grief.... you are not going to get it dirty are you... how can you? ....

We need to get that attitude adjusted pronto.coalnewbie wrote:Hmm I'm thinking that is THE protocol for a base heater. We are going to remember all of this angst next March after you have finally, at long last, struck the match and made the first fire in the base heater. We will all congratulate you once you realize that the base heaters have liberated you from a cold house and large expense. All of the second guessing and hand wringing we have been put through has got have a payoff at some point. We have been waiting for this moment for how long now?
You will not back out and cheat us of the big moment. Not an option there buddy.

So tonight is a bit chilly as already 67* and we may get a frost overnight. I drilled the hole in the stack before the MPD. Results are as follows...
OAT= 67*
Chimney draft = .08
Stove draft and MPD position as shown in picture
Upper Barrel = 400*
Lower barrel = 500*
Stack temp 1 foot after MPD = 200*
Check closed
Primary open 1/8 of an inch
