I can't tell from here whether it's "right" either. I can say that I'm unfamiliar with any 2500 sf house in Maine that could satisfactorily be heated in the dead of winter with that level of heat input. In the absence of any clarifying information, I would be...skeptical (that's diplomatic, isn't it?) about its validity.

Sting, of all of the regular participants on the forum I thought you would appreciate my reference to Samuel Cogley. I guess not.

150 yr old house? Poor insulation in some areas? Drafty? Something isn't adding up.

How is the house currently heated? Please explain the system in detail and the amount of fuel it uses.

Ok gents / lasses which ever. I will try to discribe my home as best as possible..........cape style home
Heating is primarily done by a small leisure line econo coal stove placed in the middle of the house. Down stair consists of a room on the to the left of the living room. Living room.. where the coal stove is located. This room has stairs leading to the second floor . Kitchen. This is the original homestead....----- and the converted barn(12x14) with the main entry door----:---This room has stairs leading to the second floor .yes I have two sets of stairs Second floor has 3 bedroom . Only two were part of the original home stead the third bedroom in in the converted barn all rooms the two rooms upstairs ( home/ barn ) are joined by a door which is left open so the heat naturally circulates around the whole home.......in the cellar a real old oil boiler that picks up the slack in the cold days..anything below 25 degrees.....:)

I just don't want people to be compelled to suppress their own experiences, insights and judgments solely because some computer program says they should. I think some of the dangers of that have been shown here.

Pretty miserly consumption for an old house in Maine. Does the boiler produce your domestic hot water also?

Also, does the boiler and baseboard system heat the house comfortably without help from the stove?

dhw is by propane on demand, the oil boiler would not shut down for more than 10-20 minutes..the last time I used it on its own I burnt 4 tanks and ended up buying a wood stove in February cause I couldn't afford the oil.....that was10 years ago

I know this has been said a million times, but once you go to a stoker boiler, you will never look back at the path you came from. I'm glad you are affordably warm, now all you need to do is find a solution that fits your needs and budget. Take your time and ask as many questions as you desire, and there are a few folk's not too far away that would be glad to share experiences. It is Jan 23 already, so your timing is perfect.

The shop has a large trailer hot air furnace in it ....as long as you keep the temp turned up above 50 it seems to work .....but work quite hard......it was the best at the time...now the business is growing and I need to grow..

Seems many have problems with a central boiler serving multiple structures via underground, insulated PEX. Make sure the underground PEX is 1.25 inch diameter. Cha-Ching :!:

So you have never used the radiant heat in the shop? What is the BTU output of the furnace?
