Harman Vf3000 Flue Temp

I don't think the 3 dot caution is about overfiring causing failure. It is about pushing hot coals into the bucket. I ran mine flat out and my son is running it flat out this winter for sure. It is undersized for my heat load and even with all I learned here in this forum about balancing and using lower temp water in some zones, it has to run flat out. In fact, mine has an automatic switch over to the propane boiler and in cold, high wind conditions, it will have to ask for help on a big call. They designed the stoker bed to put out only X amount of BTU's per hr. I would not hesitate to install a bigger bed in it if I had to. That would increase the flue temps and increase the capabilities of the unit.

evin do they make bigger grates for vf3000?

I do not believe so Arte. I was entertaining the notion of putting a different stoker in the Harman unit. I ran mine as high as 200 or even 210. Every degree you store in the water is one you can use before it gets knocked back down. Many will rightly caution that boiler shocking can occur if the boiler is rapidly cooled from these temps. And it is hard on the unit to have big swings. Having said that, I slowed down the flow of water and installed the bypass loop to help out with this. These things are well built.

I think I said earlier in this thread, I would put in a highly insulated secondary tank(Extrol) as the number one improvement for my situation. I am undersized for my load.

By the way they do not make a larger set of grates. The grates (called grate inserts on the Harman parts list) are part # 4-00-00046D

During this cold spell I've been pushng my boiler too. Fire to the ned of the grates and maybe even some live coal  in the ash pan.

I don't doubt that at all coalkirk. I am going to call my son and have him tour the boiler rm today with his pad and skype. I am positive mine is screaming full out. I will see if I can tweak it for a little more after a picture show.

BrotherDave wrote:Nitpicking is fine. The vf is running full tilt right now, the grate is full. I keep the feed rate so it maintains an inch of ash before the grate ends. The temp on the tee at the flue exit is reading 150. Hope this helps.
Same with my Kaa-2. Full tilt, 150* at flue. Edit: I see I already posted on page #1. As you can see, nothings changed.
