Turns out a smoke flap, for lack of a better term, fell off. It was standing against the front of the fire box. All is well.

No, not yet. Right now I'm waiting on a barometric damper I ordered.Have you fired her up yet?
It's been kinda warm here the last few days, but that's going to change pretty soon.
I'm really looking forward to seeing it up and running. It looks to be a well built unit.

Well we are up and running. Everything working as it should.
So the VC goes on Craigs List. The DSM goes to work. Thanks for the help.

Were the damaged screws the ones that hold the cast parts on? Doors etc.?CapeCoaler wrote:Keep her dry in the off season...

I wonder if it would be worthwhile removing them while my stove is new, (and they will come out without the heads breaking off), and replacing them with stainless steel screws?
What do you think?

Yes they are...
Rusto expando now nogo...
Nice Gap all over the castings...
There is also furnace cement...
so keep it dry in the off season...
Stainless will not be any better...
I think I will do bolts with the nuts out front...
I will be drilling out all the screws as 90% are shot...
It is a basement stove fo function over beauty...
I will take some pics...
This is my fault...
The house got moist and the pipe never got disconnected...
Three kids under 19 months...
Not enough time to properly shut down while we recovered at my 'rents larger home...

Well I took CapeCoaler's advice, and replaced the fire door screws on my new DSM. The weather guy predicted temps in the 50's so I let the fire burn out. Not being as fast as I used to be I figured something bad might happen if I left it running.
I used 1/4-28 X 3/4 cad plated gr8 bolts w/ the nuts on the outside, as suggested. I even put some nickel never seize on for good measure. It may not help but it can't hurt. I replaced them one at a time so not to disturb any gasket.
FYI when I went to install the lower right door bolt, I needed to grind one flat down on the bolt head. The angle iron which holds the brick in was a little too close to the bolt hole. My stove may be the only one like that, but best to check...........
Nothing like drilling holes in a brand new stove. DW will mostly likely give me the same look as when I ripped out the front seat in our brand new Crown Vic to modify it.
Best, Bill
