Questions for DS 2100WH Owners

I presently have a VC Vigilant 2. I wish to replace it with a larger stove. I'm thinking about a DS2100 w/hopper.

Can anyone tell me if the secondary air knobs on the firebox door are functional, or fakes? I would like to try burning bit coal in this stove, and being able to control over fire air would be preferable.

Even with the hopper removed, the stove could be top fed rather than filled by shovel through the fire door. Correct?

I also was considering the DS 2200, but thought the top feed feature would be a plus. Other than the hopper, and the door glass, the stoves appear to be very similar.

DS Machine stoves seem to get positive reviews here.

Any information on these stoves would be appreciated.

You may find it very useful to talk directly to DS. They can customize most stoves to be exactly what you desire.
Such as the door spinners to function and location or height of flue outlet etc.

Thank you for that suggestion. The information in the brochure is rather limited, at least for me.

I see that their phone number is on the stove brochure. I'll give them a call during the week.

My DS2200 has the air dials on the loading door and are functional and work great to burn the gasses after loading the box back up. I also have the hopper too. The fire box will hold close to 125lbs and the hopper will hold up to 35lbs. These stove are a beast when they are running good. I have had mine up to 650 for over 8 hours with no problem. I also use a baro as my draft is strong. Hope this helps.

Yes , Brett that does help, thank you. According to what I see in the brochure, the 2200 no longer has a hopper. I'm thinking that the current DS2100wh is about the same as your stove, with the addition of a glass in the fire door. If that's the case, It's just what I'm looking for.

Are you using a manual damper in addition to the barometric?

When using the hopper are you limited to burning rice, or nut anthracite? I presume that the hopper would need to be removed in order to burn a larger size, like stove.

Have you ever tried Bit, in your stove?

My memory circuit is faulty.

In the catalog it is referred to as ;

DS2100WH Basement Stove- #4 with Hopper

The solid door, no hopper, is referred to as;

DS2200 Basement Stove #4

Mine has the glass door on it too.

I did at one time but found it was not necessary because of the baro is doing a nice job with the draft.

You can put pea, nut, or stove with the hopper. It does not care.

Nope. Can't get it were I'm located at. But I have been told you can burn it in these stove as long as you have the air control knobs on the loading door to help with the gasses.

Well I ordered my DS2100WH yesterday.

Any suggestions as to the best size anthracite to use with the hopper?

It's about 55 miles to the dealer. I figure I might as well pick up some more coal when I go to get the stove.

Just to give you an idea what mine looks like. I would just get nut for now as that is what I use and have no problems with it. You could get pea with the nut and mix it for a slower burn time. I am now running the stove at 350* and shake it every 12 hours. I use about 50 lbs in a 24 hour time frame. Good luck and nice purchase.

Good Luck with your DS Machine....we LOVE our DS1500

First season burning coal, and with the hopper filled for the night, waking up to the most wonderful heat my house has ever experienced, with better than half the hopper still full. During these single digit nights, I am however burning hotter to keep the porcelain floors above warmer so they also radiate heat.

Once I wake up, dial back the rheostat on the back, which btw is the only way to adjust, and is by far my favorite method. Having had the same set up on my VC Defiant Encore, it's simply a matter of dialing the heat output you want, and leaving it alone. Other than aesthetics, the front adjusters do not turn...kinda weird to me, but I guess they use a universal door for other stoves that do need that adjustment.

We're currently burning about 50 lbs a day with night temperatures under 10 degrees, the house is maintaining 65-67 degrees. With our wood stove burning, we're able to get 70-75, which in all honesty is almost too warm if you have reason to be stepping in and out a lot...Hey, I'm not complaining!

Having burned pellets, and direct vent kerosene when fuel was under $ .90 a gallon, this is by far the best decision I have made to bring warmth and comfort to my home.

Well I picked up my stove today. I'll work on hooking it up tomorrow.

Something odd though. I found a 1/4- 20 nut and bolt along with a clip of some sort, sitting loose in the ash pan.

It looks like it came from a hole just above the fire door, on the left. There is a mate to it on the right, above the door. The nut was loose, but everything was in place.

I can't see any reason for these parts. They appear to be made to hold a rod or something in place, but there is nothing there, and I can't imagine what would be mounted in that area.

I intend on calling DSM on Monday and asking them. Maybe the gafinkilator fell out???

Any ideas??
