Alaska channing 2 parts breakage

Alaska channing 2 parts breakage

PostBy: Kiwidiaspora On: Sun Jan 26, 2014 8:26 pm

Hi,

I heat my workshop with a ratty looking channing 2.

Over the years I have changed out the feed for one with the half moon paddle.

last year the tube that sticks out the bottom of the housing ,for the feed that the paddle shaft goes through ,broke free. I bought and installed a new housing and paddle (shaft had bent and snapped)

This year I fired it up and broke another paddle and manage to strip the gears on the feed motor........after muttering , I replaced them and fired it up. It ran well for a week and then snapped the tube on the housing again.

The coal I'm using has been sitting a while , but nothing else seems out of place....has anyone else had problems like these or am I just lucky.

Any ideas on what could be the cause ?

Al.

Well,I don't have your stove, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night,so here goes! For openers,Welcome to the Coal Board,my Long Handled Friend! Are you using Bulk or Bagged Coal? Have you been able to check it for the Infamous Foreign Non-Coal debris ? You know, items like the Front Clip from a 1940 Desoto,Tire Irons,Wood and the like? Do you have anything pre-bent or bearings going to Hell on you that could put a bind in the works? If the little Monster's down for Repair, can you make the needed fixes and dry operate it without Coal to confirm a smooth No-Load Operation? Let us know, and I'm sure that higher IQ'd Folks will be arriving soon to kick things around with you! :gee:

That paddle like 2 things, dry coal and properly sized coal.
Is there a small air gap between paddle and push area, so not rubbing tight?
Are you getting fused ash (clinkers) near end of grate and causing more effort to be pushed the off end of grate?

I tore it down today and there was a clinker wall.

I had bought an old triburner from a wood guy and switched them out this afternoon and have heat back on........still stewing on whether to repair the channing or say goodbye to it.
