After much research I finally installed a dhw coil in the Hitzer. My set-up is well water into 50 gal holding tank, thru coil, back to top of tank. The holding tank is then plumbed into a 66 gal hot water heater about 20' away.

I will say it was slow to heat but seems to be doing fine now. I guess heating cold well water takes a lot of energy… I haven't turned off the electric water heater as of yet but I doubt it's working very hard.

Sorry about the sideways pics.

Its thermosypon. Didn't like the idea of losing power and the water just sitting in the coil. Wanted it to be as simple as possible.

Thanks to all who let me borrow their knowledge. :D

Nice work.. My hot water coil set up is the same. Two tanks in series. I leave the electric tank powered but its not working very hard, like you said since the water is preheated by the furnace. Saves me $300 in electric across the 6 months I burn coal. That's a free ton + some!! Did you install any valves so that you can bypass the furnace in the summer? If cold water is left running thru the coil in the summer it cold be very bad for it.. If not, you can always reroute the plumbing in the spring and worry about it for next burning season. 8-)

Here's my set up if you didn't see it..

No such thing as "FREE" hot water

The energy transported into the storage of the DHW tank is simply NOT going into the dwelling that your heating

More wisdom from cheesetown. I need ALL the BTUs I can get for heating. DHW is a small add on at this point that I am content to pay the propane bill for. That oxygen dihydride stuff in the heating system is just more problems than I need.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA, I slay myself

Sting, of course that's true lol but for the little bit of extra coal required in a hand fed it's as close to free as you get. .. :)

Not only that, but since the coil is additional heat transfer surface area, it could be soaking up some of the heat that would've been lost up the stack without it.

Not going to take away from any of the effort and engineering you put into the system. But... Cinder blocks have no strength laying down. You have a thousand pounds of water on top of them. Chances are you won't have any issues. If down the road you drain down that tank I'd fix those blocks.

Carry on!

Flu gas siphon - or Up the stack loss - is still necessary function of energy transfer from the magic black rock [ or burning NG :) ] and if energy is scrubbed from that source - well the stack may/might not function as well as it could - or flu gas may begin to condense

It Depends

yes this is a very frugal DHW production method and bravo to all who undertake -- but lets not kid ourselves about it being "FREE"

Kind Regards
Sting
