JohnB wrote:I hope that $6.26 price per bag was the delivered price?? Considering the much lower fuel prices I would have expected to see better coal & delivery prices this year but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm not buying this year unless I see a great deal.

What do you think is a fair price to deliver 4800 lbs of coal on two pallets shrink wrapped driving 110 miles round trip in a flatbed truck with the coal and full size forklift spending 2 1/2 hours doing it? Who do you buy coal from that will deliver to SE CT for less by the ton and charge less than 75 to deliver? When TS sold Kimmels last year it was thought to be at cost or barely above. If correct the profit on 2.4 tons is around 125 bucks. About 20% and less than you can run 99% of most businesses. Geez other people need to eat too. I don't think you are being realistic to be honest. The 75 to deliver is a gift sort of a customer service in my mind. I have a small business and travel all the time and if I had to make that trip in a 4 door sedan that gets 30 mpg I would charge 50 for travel without the fork lift or 4800 lbs. of coal.

So is that your way of telling us that you are paying $6.26 per bag plus $75 delivery charge. It's a simple question how about a simple answer without all the drama??

Since I live in northeastern Ct. I don't spend much (zip) time researching who delivers to S.E Ct. or what they charge. The two times I've bought Blaschak, 3 pallets each time, I bought from Pellets Direct in Mass. First year I paid $39 & last year $49 for delivery. I buy from them in July when they run their deals. They also show up with a flat bed truck & a forklift. They haul each pallet across my yard to my storage area & they will even rotate the left over coal pallets to the front of the pile. Their current price is $309 a ton but that usually drops to $295 or so in July.

No drama here just a reality check. I went to the website you suggested and 309 a ton for early orders and slightly ( a few bucks less) for over 3 tons. For my usual 2.4 tone delivery the tragic difference is 25.51 at their lowest possible delivery rate and at their highest with the 70 mile limit (that I am not or a bunch of other people) on it 5.51 sort of a spare me moment to think at 4 bucks more a ton it needs to delivered free LOL. None of their delivery mentions driving over a lawn without trashing it and has extra charge for different driveway styles like it matters.

You are correct, they don't deliver to your area & as I said the good deals are in July, not now. Unlike you I have had them deliver to my house, run across my lawn with the forklift & there were no ruts left behind. Despite the various delivery descriptions on their site the delivery guys will do what you need to have done once they get here at no extra charge. That $309 isn't an early order price, it's been there since last Fall. Check back in July to see their best deals of the year. Currently BT has everyone beat on Blaschak but their delivery charges to this part of the state are brutal.

I see that they've added Reading coal in the past week @ $279 a ton for 3 tons. Blaschak is $299 a ton with a 3 ton deal. Buy 12 tons of the Reading & get it for $269 a ton on a direct ship deal. I've heard lots of mixed reviews on the Reading coal. Anybody feel lucky??

Almost every bag of Kimmels I opened this season had a strip of wood in it. The Blaschak bags sometimes had a piece of a large nail but once this past winter I found a complete 5" long bolt with washer.

If they offer some deals on coal pricing or delivery in July I may pick up some of the Reading.

A stick I have no problem. Wood burns. Not a big deal to me. I had a rock in a bag of Kimmels the size of a small dinner plate!

Rocks and metallic objects would be an issue. If they caused damage to my stove, I'm certain I would contact the company and ask to be compensated for any losses due to their carelessness.

I picked up 3 tons of the Reading Pea from Pellets Direct this week for $274 a ton + delivery. P/D started carrying Reading last Fall when they were having issues with Blaschak not being able to supply the volume they needed. Blaschak has since sorted out the issue so P/D is selling off their existing stock of Reading & won't be restocking. They expect to be sold out of the Reading by Fall.

I opened one bag to see how it looked. Sizing was pretty uniform but there are a lot of fines covering the wet coal chunks. Looks to be more of a wet coal as opposed to a washed coal. No big deal as it all burns as long as there isn't a big pile of fines at the bottom of the bag.

I had bought several tons of bulk Reading years ago from the guy in Meriden. It was full of car parts. Brake parts, voltage regulator, wires and assorted hardware. The Mayor said it was probably from the shipper backhauling scrap. Stuff burned good but I wasn't too pleased with the experience.
