even if it needs some bricks or grates this is a fantastic heat MONSTER.

Another Octopus. Sunbeam, has kidney (which is surprising). Arm is missing for the shaker grate (the rectangular hole can be seen at bottom left) This type of furnace had 2 types of grates, shaker and roller. Roller grates were like 'triplex' grates, lots of fingers for tearing up clinkers.

I am looking at the $200 stove + coal. I am not familiar with stoves "inserted" into fireplaces. Is this just a standard Mark series stove with some custom sheet metal framed around it? I would want to use just the stove as a freestanding unit. Is that possible?

That green sheetmetal does look like a custom shield, but yes, you could use just the insert. Of course you would have to block off your flue, with the exception of the stove pipe union.
