There are three wonderful high end kitchen ranges for sale around Boston. According to the pictures, they all look to be in very good condition:

A very ornate Villa Crawford in Phillipston MA for $995

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/atq/5014325839.html

A wonderful Magee range in Newton MA (my hometown) for $1500 or B/O

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/atq/5009950028.html

A huge Fortress Crawford with upper warming oven in New Hampshire for $1500.

http://nh.craigslist.org/for/4987743368.html

I'd consider grabbing any or all of them, if I had the money - Chris

Some nice finds Chris.

That Crawford has the triangular coal grates and they look good. Just need the cogs (gears), that are laying in the oven, put back on the grate bars. Then line the firebox with refractory cement, get Freddy to make an ash pan, find the operating hand tools, and hopefully, it'll be ready to go.

The Magee is a pretty stove, but priced high. Even more so if there are no coal grates left from when the oil conversion was done ????

The Fortress Crawford is in nice shape. Fancy model with the roll top warming oven and the two warming cabinets below. And, I see it has the dish towel drying rod and a shaker handle hanging up on the right upper side. Plus a cover lifter handle stuck in the right front round cover.

But, no mention of what type grates and no pix showing condition of the insides at all - I'd make sure to check on that before making an offer.

It looks to me that the Crawford is missing two grate bars. There are two posts sticking out of the front door to turn them and the gears would turn the two missing outside grates. If they are not missing, there sure is a huge gap on either side of the two that are there.

There's an amazing Cinderella 12 Air Tight on eBay with a very low Buy-It-Now price of $390.00. It looks to be complete and in great condition. Similar to the Acme Carbon, it's located in Vonore Tennessee.

eBay listing: Cast Iron Parlor Stove 171787826736

In case anyone's interested - Chris

Randy,

I think that only two grate bars are needed. The gaps on either side of them are because the firebrick linings are missing.

Paul, if that is the case, then why would you need the gears that are in the oven? I am pretty sure those gears were to turn the missing grate bars. Doesn't really matter though, those adds are no longer up on Craigslist. :D

Randy,

The two grate bar ends sticking through the firebox front cover are just their bearing points. Looking at the picture, when the ad was still up, I only saw that the left hand grate bar had a triangular shaped end for the shaker handle. Therefore the gears are to tie the two grate bars together so that both move opposite to each other at the same time. Thus grinding the clinkers between the teeth of both bars.

And that's the way my Sunny and most of the Glenwood ranges are that have the triangular grates.

On older models like mine, just that left hand grate extends through the front of the stove. See the picture below. Shortly after that Glenwood and other range manufacturers, like that Crawford, went to enclosing the grate bars behind a door.
