I had a metal covered box made to fit my ash pan. Slide the pan out and put it in the box. Clip the lid on, grab the handle and walk through the house to the outdoor metal trash can to dump. Worked great! When loading the stove, I opened up the damper with a nice hot fire to increase draft and carefully tossed a bucket of coal in and closed the door. All the dust was sucked into the stove. Never noticed any appreciable ash anywhere but right in from of the ash door. No additional house dusting was ever required. The stove was in the great room where we all spent most of our time.

Tin snips, a hammer, a sharpie, a ruler and a leftover knob and I ended up with my dust control plan...a cover for my ash pan for the trip outside. It was fun, too!
