Out of Road Salt?!!?

PostBy: Carbon12 On: Fri Feb 07, 2014 1:37 pm

Some school districts in the area are still closed because the municipalities have run out of rock salt. Can't get the roads cleared, apparently. First a pro pain shortage and now rock salt,.....What the Heck???

According to the newspaper article, the nearby STATE stockpile of salt is fine. The local municipalities CAN borrow from the state stockpile, however,.........paperwork must be filed and approved before that can happen. You'd think a couple of phone calls and it would be a done deal,.....you'd think

Ohio's got the same problem. Seems more probable that as Tax Payers disappear,so does Funding. As aggravatingly inept as many Government Officials portray themselves,I'm leaning toward Funding and not ALGORE'ng  It can be said that they did get spoiled in the Weak Winter Pattern that we've had for many years. :gee:

pendot should start droping the snowplow instead of droping salt on the road. It's redicilous the amount of salt they use instead of just plowing

I remember hearing the school bus coming because of the tire chains. No plows or salt needed back then.

About ten to fifteen years ago, we had a bad winter and the feds pulled the top limit on truckers hauling road salt to the different road departments. The Local PennDot yard ran out of salt early in the year, then stocked up again. Once the emergency was over, the local road departments decided to band together to purchase salt to save money. Yeah, right save money. My township paid more per ton then they had before. :? Now they order the salt brine and store it in big tanks.
You guys in Eastern Pa, should live here in the Lake Effect Snow Zone, it would be a good learning experience for you. :D Walk out of the house and go to the shop with the sun shining, work in the shop for an hour or so and walk out to 6" of fresh snow on the ground that fell while you were in the shop. :?

We don't use the evil salt in Alaska we use the residue left when you evaporate sea water, much greener sounding. :)

Bangor, Maine... our road salt does not come from the USA! I'd have to make a phone call but I think it comes from South America. Weird.

100%! agree! Its fun to watch these fools drop a about enough brine solution to wipe out the entire global slug population to see us just get a dusting. When the road is white, isnt their enough on it already. Plows and some form of cinders/antiskid is suitable for the majority of the snow storms we see anymore in NEPA.
