going rate per sheet for drywall hanging?

going rate per sheet for drywall hanging?

PostBy: titleist1 On: Mon Feb 10, 2014 1:43 pm

I have a college age nephew and one of his buddies that are not working currently and I could use their muscle to hang some drywall in my workshop. I would like to pay them per sheet since they are not experienced at hanging drywall and I could see it stretching out much longer than it needs to. They helped me do the upstairs last year so a basic refresher course on the first sheet will probably be needed for them. I will be using 5/8" 4x8 on the ceiling and 1/2" 4x8 on the walls. 12 footers are too long to maneuver in the shop around the equipment.

Anyone have an idea of a fair rate to pay per sheet? I will be supplying the drywall, screws & tools. Keep in mind its warm out there with the stoker running, so its not like they will be freezing while doing it! :D

Hanging drywall and spackling SUCKS!!! So, I'm gonna be completely unfair here and say anyone being punished enough to have to do that should be compensated around $150 an hour. Screw that per sheet crap. ;) :P

 I won't be asking them to mud it, just hang it. Mudding for me is ear buds in, music playing, a few hours of 'me' time.

Hanging the ceiling was never my favorite thing to do. A few years ago I bought a used drywall lift they can use if they want to hoss the equipment out of the shop and into the garage.

I have one of those hoists too. Works great so long as the ceiling you are working on is level and straight. Sucks when it's not.

Give them $10.00 an hr each & MAKE SURE you're getting your moneys worth--if not, sh-t can the lil over educated fckers--good Lord T, ya don't pay laborers by the sheet NOR any upfront money--in fact pay them on Mondays--God I'm old & grumpy ;) --PS DON'T listen to IOF--he's got a real bad track record hiring people  toothy

I did quite a few jobs that I would have made more "by the sheet" but that was finishing as well. If everything is fairly square & have a screw gun hanging don't take much time at all.
IOF, & then you wonder why there are so many illegals here, they do the jobs others won't.

Fred, I don't want to be a baby sitter which is what would happen if i paid them hourly. I don't care if it takes them all week out there, even though it should only take 1 day, i just want the stuff hung and figured a per sheet payment was in my best interest.

The lift is a great thing for doing ceilings when you work alone! I never figured out how to use the dead men by myself.

Mudding out there will be quick since I don't need a real good finish in the shop. I won't do any sanding on it, I'll just scrape the boogers off the first coat and feather in the second scraping any pressure lines. After seeing how they cut in the boxes upstairs more time will probably be taken covering those overcuts than on the seams!

How many sheets and how high are the ceilings? 5/8 is heavy. How many cuts around lights and such do they have to make? These are all things taken into consideration when a pro figures a job. I have hung way to much of it and I also have a cheap lift. It works much better then I do! I looked up an online cost estimator and it calculated just over a $1/sq. ft. Your mileage may vary. OR it depends.
