Chubby or Army cannon?

Chubby or Army cannon?

PostBy: katntrinsmom On: Tue Feb 11, 2014 10:41 pm

I can't find any info really on army cannon stoves. Found one for sale and wanted to get all your input on which is better? Love the customer service I have received from Larry so far and he seems like an awesome person. But when it comes to heat output and what not, which is better? Afraid cannon might be to much heat, just under 2000 sq. ft. Not sure which cannon number it is but doesnt look like the no. 20 beast.

I have a cannon heater, not the brand you speak of but just the same. I can crank mine but that's not the problem, the problem lies controlling the fire with coal. Mine is as tight as throwing a hot dog down a hallway. I understand these stoves are (were) made to operate "during normal business hours" and did a great job at that. You came to work, or in the shop and fired her up and stoked it a couple times and you were good until the whistle blew and it died out soon after. I think heating in a consistent both time and comfort the Chubby is the one!

Hands down, I would agree the Chubby is the way to go. You will be able to control the fire much better with it.

Thanks everyone! That's what I was thinking. Only reason I was considering the cannon is the price I can get it for. First instincts are normally correct though. :D

Price is always a concern. However... If something would break on the cannon heater you could be down for the count heating wise. If something would need to be replaced on a Chubby, parts are a phone call away and probably no more than a 48 hour wait till they are at your door.

A little motto I have always liked is.. "Quality isn't expensive... It's PRICELESS" And a Chubby is a quality stove. :D

in all fairness... Ive seen some station heater coal stoves that are pretty epic! (but they are rare and generally people now know the money they are worth)... unless it was a brand name station heater i would NOT even consider a cannon or antique pot belly over a Chubby to heat your house! #1 your prolly going to pay the same amount of money to find one in great condition #2 if you were lucky enough to find one in great condition for a few hundred bucks its most likely going to be a 30k BTU size #3 you would NEVER be able to obtain spare parts...without recasting them at a foundry! #4 they are essentially the same design stove but the Chubby is modernized, sized well & UL tested for todays homes & use.

This is a "no-brainer" as they say...

DCrane is Right... in the Great storm of 78 We lost power for 13 days on Duxbury Bay, Ma.. we were fortunate to have a great Hurricane lamp collection, two Jotul 118 stoves, 2 propane tanks and 12 neighbors that brought board games, the contents of their refrigerators, and bottles of Post holiday Cheer into our
home... the next year several of the neighbors bought jotul stoves.... The only way it would have been better
as a 10 yr old was if We had 2 chubbys instead of the Jotuls but the jotuls did us well.... if you do buy an old cannon stove make damn sure aftermarket parts are avaiable ..... If you are not careful it could end up as very expensive lawn ornament..

Ok in Military terms that our WWII vets would recognize

The Chubby Coalstove is to the Cannon
as a Tiger was to the Sherman

The Cannon will do the trick but 1 mistake (Distraction) child crying, phone.... when left wide open will create a meltdown..not so with the Chubby...there have been several times i have walked away ..and left the house with the stove wide open only to come back and find the temp at 650.... just lower the draft and in 15 mins you are back to normal... dont be pennywise and pound foolish..call Dr. Trainer and order a referbushed stove.. you dont need the Blower stove... it works nice but a reg chubby will heat your house fine at 5 dollars a day....
