Need a new laptop ASAP

Need a new laptop ASAP

PostBy: Rick 386 On: Tue Feb 18, 2014 7:50 pm

Get to work this AM and fire up the laptop and blank screen. Damn screen went bad. You can see it if you shine a bright flashlight into it. Just like our TV 3 weeks ago. It is the backlight for the LCD screen.

I'm hard on them and the work environment is not really good to them with the dust and dirt I generate.

So do I spend $ 40-60 for a new screen or just get a newer laptop.

This is a HP 2000-410US. I never really liked it. But the price was good at the time when the Toshiba started having issues.

The only way I can access the HP right now is through teamviewer. It has all me accounting and estimating software and files on it so I will need to transfer if buying new.

Any suggestions ??? Checked out MAC but my estimating software will not run on it.

DK got me an ACER - it doesn't do anything fancy but it's been very dependable. He made sure I can plug my desk screen and a wireless keyboard in to it. When I do that the laptop acts as my desk tower. That's handy when I have paper work I want to spread out and a larger screen. As the laptop, I carry it with me just about every where I go. I have an external hard drive so I can back all my files. We'd buy another one if we needed one. Lisa

If possible, get a tablet. Windows or ipad. They have armored, dust proof cases for them. Some are even submersible :D

I've ordered Dell's before and they got here very fast. Also, you may want to check out Lenovo refurbished, scratch and dent models. Prices start at $228. Outlet.lenovo.com.

HP 2000-410US is showing a vga output, hook up a old monitor to it for the time being to use it.

All we use at work are Lenovo Think Pads. So that is all I have ever bought as my personal Notebook as well. I never broke one yet. My brand new Notebook is the Lenovo IdeaPad. I just got it last week. Amazingly fast! It has JBL sound system built in. FINALLY... A Notebook with speakers that I can actually hear !

Like I tell people when they ask me what lap top to get,....I ask them what they plan on doing with it. They usually don't have a clue. I know people with loaded Mac book pros and all they do is Face book and email. Could have spent a small fraction on a netbook that would do that. They don't, game, or edit video. All the power of the Mac is wasted,....and so is their money. The Mac is shiny, though,.....oooooohhhhh!

The university I work at uses Lenovo ThinkPads. My shop repairs about 2800 of them a year, students can be pretty rough. They also offer ThinkPad Protection which covers most damages, and is not limited each year like many. The ThinkPads are pretty rugged. Using them now for 14 years, over 10,000 purchased over that time.

Yep, those KVM extenders work great when you need a workstation out on the loading dock or in the guard shack. Its a lot cheaper to replace the K/V/M's than the motherboards.

You are correct. Apple makes excellent hardware. I've owned many name brand laptops running Windows. I finally bought a Apple MacBook Pro with the Retinal display. It's a stunning display, great battery life and relatively light weight. Not really wanting to fully learn a new OS I installed Windows 7 Pro on it. It's configured for dual boot in which I can boot either the Apple or the Windows operating system. It was expensive but the quality and performance are correspondingly high. I love it.

Sorry again Yanche. We write 40,000 page reports for the FDA in Word and Acrobat. We've tried all those Macs. Our docs are organized by complex templates hidden behind VPNs given to us by our customers and Macs always crash. Been there done that. Unix with Windows on top is stupid. A good modern Ivybridge laptop, running 2x27" external monitors (BenQ is the best at $200 each at 1920x1080 and at least as good as Cinema displays) is the way to go and MUCH cheaper, faster, better and more stable. Boy there must be a lot of money in electrics. Now Apple iphone/ipad products have no equal and that is where Apple shines. Macs are fine until you actually try to do any work on them except they excel at graphics like designing the front cover of Vogue magazine. Been like that for 30 years and nothing changes.

I have an HP G72 running Windows 7. Very fast & stable, has not had any issues in the 3 years I have been using it. I do NOT recommend Windows 8.
