I'm not a happy camper with the coal I've been burning over the last 30 hrs. I had to dump the fire box. Here is a pic of just some of what was in the ashes. It was from a load of bulk Jeddo or Reading "nut" that I had picked up a few weeks ago. I hadn't noticed much of this until now as I had been mixing this with some Blaschak. Then I had burned some stove sized. Now I have this stuff unmixed and all I can say is that I'm glad I only have 20# left. I have 160-180# from another source,I hope it burns better than this. Sorry about the poor picture quality.

Looks like the Reading stove/nut mix I burned in Big Bertha two years ago.. lots of hard ash and it clinkered easily. Blaschak is a white ash coal, it burns to a fine powder usually, and if mixed with the Reading will help prevent the clinkers. There are other sources for good coal though..

Greg, The batch I have going now is also Reading but from a different dealer. I hope it is better quality than what is pictured. I'll find out in about 24hrs. So far all the Blaschak's that I have located has been bagged.Doesn't appear that anyone carries bulk Blaschak. Looks like I'll just have to cough up the extra bucks for bagged.
BTW, There was Definitely some molten metal in some of those chunks.I thought there would be as some of the coal looked like it had spots of rust.

Thanks Coalstoves, I'll have to give them a call and see what their prices are and if they will deliver way up here. I have a mini van so I wouldn't be able to haul much more than 500-600# at a time. It would probably be cheaper for them to deliver.

So far this load is burning good.I won't know about the ash for a while. One thing different is this batch is coated with oil.It smells like I'm back to burning fuel oil. LOL. With the oil coating it seems to get to burning quicker.
Blaschak is hands down the best coal I've burned in my insert. The fact that it burns to powder no matter what the outside conditions gives me the satisfaction of knowing I'm maximizing the coal's use.LsFarm wrote:Looks like the Reading stove/nut mix I burned in Big Bertha two years ago.. lots of hard ash and it clinkered easily. At this point I can say that this batch isn't much better than the last. Ash content in the firebox is pretty much the same as pictured.I have a little less than 3 1/2 buckets left to get burned up.I'll be burning wood till next weekend when I can work on burning up the remainder. My wife will tend a wood fire but it is my job to take care of the coal.
