What a shame. Sad to read of this. As time goes on it seems that CO detectors should be more common than they are. No matter what the fuel, if you make a flame to make heat, there ought to be CO detectors.

They are burying 3 folks from southern, NH today also. Propane heating system that had an exhaust vent obstructed by deep snow. I am shocked that people don't have, don't check, and don't respect the words odorless, colorless, tasteless.......or worse yet, remove or don't replace the batteries in non-hard wired alarms. That mall disaster was just plain lucky more were not injured or killed.

Years ago, it was dying in a car while out parking...engine idling.....leaky exhaust. Not many monoxide deaths in homes. Oil, propane, NG, coal....they will all kill you if exhaust isn't properly vented to atmosphere..

Even if you only have electric, you should still have a couple,....just like smoke detectors. A car or truck idling outside can also be a source if indoor carbon monoxide. A car idling in a attached garage is often a source. Don't just get one detector,...get several.

As most folks are aware, the sensors don't last forever, especially oxygen sensors. It is mandatory to replace smoke detectors every 10 years, but I'd cut that in half, and do it on a favorite holiday.....or your birthday week......and TEST THEM monthly, or more often.

Battery powered detectors are easy to install, for obvious reasons, but hard wired are more secure....especially if kids remove batteries....
