Anthracite is really in no way competition for natural gas for heating. The number of homes and businesses heated by anthracite is a pimple on the rear end of a blue whale compared to natural gas.

I believe I heard recently that 2% of homes in the USA are heated exclusively with wood. My guess for coal as the exclusive heat source would be 2% of that 2%.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that about 200,000 homes use anthracite as a primary or supplemental heat source. Compared to the millions of homes heated with natural gas, coal isn't even a blip on the radar.

"Coal refuse pile" ??? Slag, boney, whatever?

$2 MILLION of federal funds allocated and the cost is going up because of the time it is taking.

What I was trying to say is as follows. With fracking untold amounts of water is used. With our pimple on the back of a blue whale tail as it has been compared to, who cares if our 2% of 2% fuel used is depleted because of idiots, and carelessness, heaven forbid we should take serious efforts to keep another Centralia from happening. Now we can just burn oil because gas is not a choice, there is some joy
