They need the open bed as they usually use a front end loader to just dump it into whatever you got. You may want to consider buying a trailer that you could haul to the breaker. Have it open on top and just tarp it to travel and use. By the looks of the place you could park the trailer wherever you want. Then keep some bagged on hand to cover you when the trailer gets emptied until you make another run. There are also several pics of various coal bins on this site as well.
And Lisa, the hole in the floor (register) is to help with airflow IF NEEDED. I guess we would not know until whatever appliance she decides to use. My parents have real nice register covers on the floor and ceiling to each room in their house. And no they did not connect any ductwork for air returns. The bedroom door determines if the air flows or not.
