THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!

Thought this deserved its own thread

THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears
with their tedious diatribes about how hard things
were when they were growing up; what with walking
twenty-five miles to school every morning ... uphill
BOTH ways

yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up,
there was no way in hell I was going to lay
a bunch of crap like that on kids about how
hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of
thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the
youth of today.

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my
childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!
And I hate to say it but you kids today you
don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The
Internet . If we wanted to know something,
we had to go to the damn library and
look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!
There was no email!! We had to actually
write somebody a letter with a pen!
Then you had to walk all the way across the street
and put it in the mailbox and it would take like
a week to get there!

There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to
steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record
store and shoplift it yourself!
Or
you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ
would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up!
We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you
were on the phone and somebody e lse called they
got a busy signal, that's it!

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either!
When the phone rang, you had no idea
who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss,
your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you
just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take
your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video
games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had
the Atari 2600! With games ike 'Space Invaders'
and 'asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You
actually had to use your imagination!! And there
were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one
screen forever!

And you could never win. The game just kept getting
harder and harder and faster and faster until you died!
Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such
thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the
same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat
sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were
just screwed!

Sure, we had cable television, but back then that
was only like 15 channels and there was no
on screen menu and no remote control! You had to use a
little book called a TV Guide to find out what was
on! You were screwed when it came to
channel surfing! You had to get off
your ass and walk over to the TV to
change the channel and there was no
Cartoon Network either! You cou ld
only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you
hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK
for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat
something up we had to use the stove or go build a
frigging fire .. imagine that! If we wanted
popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing
and shake it over the stove forever like an
idiot.

That' s exactly what I'm talking about! You kids
today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys
wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!

Regards,
The over 30
Crowd

---------------------------------

I got a good laugh about this:

And there
were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one
screen forever!

And you could never win. The game just kept getting
harder and harder and faster and faster until you died!

 Makes me think of the space invader guy going a hundred mile an hour across the screen.

I just turned 31 this past October. Man I feel old after reading that. Except we never had an atari or cable. 4 stations over the antenna.

Sorry you had it so rough!
We had 7 channels, 6 actually, no one watched Ch. 13 much.
I remember going to other people's houses to watch color TV, we didn't get one until 1973 (BTW-I still have it), it was a big deal, had to replace the antenna on the roof with one that was made for color TV. Probably just a sales pitch to sell more antennas.
When cable TV was available we did sign up, the channel box was on top of the TV, so we still had to get up to change the channel.
I remember people who were really old telling me that when they were kids everyone would sit around watching the radio by gaslight, waiting for electricity to be invented.

I remember playing Pong. I lost interest in video games after that, though.

I remember waking my parents up on Saturday mornings to have them adjust the TV antenna rotator so I could watch Bugs Bunny. Click-clack-Click-clack-Click-clack. We got our first color TV in 1977 and I had it still up until a few years ago - 19" solid state Zenith.

I remember the cable boxes that had the "remote", which was big box with a series of piano key-like pushbuttons and a long cord to the actual tuner box.

Atari 2600 - heh, my in-laws still have the full setup with all the games and controllers. It still works, and boy is it sure a hoot to play today - but boring very quickly. I was at the tail end of Pong, but I did have friends that had one.

Lemme see, what else was "new" back then - The Eraser-Mate pen, Casio solar calculators, and I remember Scratch and Sniff was the hot collectible.

My parents had this 'awesome' light yellow-green '77 Pinto wagon that was the biggest POS I ever saw. The rear end howled like an old school bus, it had mis-cut carpet, defects in the vinyl seats, and it was burning oil after 50K miles, even with good maintenance.

Oh yeah, I'll be 39 this year....

Facts of life from when I was a teenager (late 1980's) that would simply not be tolerated by todays teenagers.

* We played at this place we called OUTSIDE ! we didn't sit our
lazy butts on the couch for hours on end playing Playstation.

* We called our elders Mr or Mrs Doe. and never greeted them
with a "Yo" or a What'ssup "

* If we wanted spending money we got these things
called JOBS !! mowing grass, shoveling snow, whatever
we didn't ask daddy for it because we already knew
the answer

* we played sports ! high school rec league, in the back yard
where ever.

* If you were lacking talent and dedication to a sport you
were trying out for, YOU GOT CUT from the team.

* If we wanted a car we got another JOB to pay for it.

* if we wanted to make a call we went inside the house and
used the phone that was stuck on the kitchen wall.

* We helped around the house without thinking it was
totally appaulling to be asked to do so. it was either
help or get a boot where the sun don't shine.

***** ( this is my biggest pet peeve of them all ) ****
When our pants were Falling down WE PULLED THEM UP !!!!
