Just for grins I did a CL search and found quite a few listings for $8 / bag (are the bags 40 or 50lbs?) and even a listing for a 1/2 ton for $200.

Could be a money maker next year....fill the garage with skids of pellets, wait until the late Feb panic and put them up for sale!! If I can't get the car in the garage, I may as well put something that can generate money in there instead of all the stuff waiting for that never to happen yard sale.

Hand Fed Coal Stove: Shopping for the perfect one

I'm in southern MD below Wash DC and it's crazy here too. People used to mild winters did not stock up and we're in the teens this morning. Tractor Supply and Lowes have already replaced wood stoves with barbecues and lawn mowers. In the 5 minutes I stood in line at the hardware store three people came in looking for pellets. Craigslist price gouging at least 2x original cost.

Now you see why I buy all my winter's heating needs in JULY ....

My buddy texted me that Home Depot has a sign on their door saying WE ARE OUT OF PELLETS. People are in panic mode. Everyone's scrambling ...

Was reading that post about electric space heaters. Around here it would be cheaper to buy $4/gallon oil than run one of those suckers!! :o

PALLETS, Dave, PALLETS. not pellets....

Of course they know you are a coal guy and would not stoop to such a level as to sell pellets.

They want to put the PALLETS through their wood chipper and make their own pellets. :gee:

I hope the fuel supply/weather becomes a little kinder and SOON. There are a few principles to adhere to:

Waterboarding your granny to find additional fuel supplies is OK.

but NEVER...

Screw with your coal stove dealer,, and

Never upset your coal supplier

The pellets I got at the end of a bad winter many years ago were of such poor quality that they killed the stove every 3 days or so. We should not mention bad stove suppliers like Harman P38+ and an older Harman Quadrafire. So I will give brief review.... puke, barf, honk...

The rest of life is easy.

I never liked the Idea of being locked in to one type of fuel , in dire situations or in a catastrophe of some sort I could always scrounge old pallets , both of my stoves burn wood pretty well! That really is terrible for Anyone who primarily heat with pellets!

Yes but locked in means many things to many people. I have rice and nut stoves from different manufacturers and source my coal from from different suppliers. I only pick suppliers that can get me spares tout suite and are reasonably priced and I carry spares. So my coal backup is coal. Works for me.

I saw $20 a bag for pellets at one point on CL...
Storing pellets in a bag is not fun...
Silo properly set up might be better...
But I still like coal properties better...
It will not go bad... ;)
