Chubby Love

PostBy: dubie On: Tue Mar 04, 2014 11:01 pm

I am a coal virgin no longer... last week my refurbished Chubby stove arrived (wed. 2/26/14). I never burned coal before. I've had a Jotul wood stove insert for the longest time and ran out of wood and was concerned I might not be able to find seasoned wood so late in the season and started doing some research on the web to look for alternate heat sources and found this site. I wished it would have dawned on me sooner as my grandfather had a hand fired coal stove when I was growing up and I remember shaking it down and the big bag of coal that was on a pallet in the driveway. Fond memories and I remember his house was always real warm. Anyway, I found this site and read a lot. I watched http://www.vimeo.com/8506320 this video Larry made a gazillion times. I was excited to get started and when the stove arrived, I wasted no time in hooking it up and getting it going. I am blessed with great draft and this thing has been burning a week straight (add coal twice a day and shake once) now and I love being able to sleep the night away and not have to worry about feeding the wood stove... no bark everywhere on my hearth and trails of wood chips from the door to the fireplace. The last bit of wood I did bring in also had a nest of spiders that woke up after warming up on my wood pile in my living room (not fun). I am now a coal evangelist. I absolutely love this stove and can't say enough good things about it. I never would have known it was refurbished. Larry did an excellent job on this thing... Anyway, thanks to all the posts here, it helped me a lot not only on deciding on coal but also how to burn coal etc. Yes, I also bought 4 CO detectors... :) I am posting a few pictures of my install and first burn... good stuff :)

Gratz!!! and GREAT PHOTOS DUDE! The ole' tell tail we all look for that says "Job well done".... the big ole' kitty cat curled up in front of the stove

That lil' Chubby is gonna crush any Jotul wood stove you could have had in terms of heat production as well as burn times and easy of operation.

The "Fireview Door" on the Chubby is truly a beautiful thing. I love it when I come inside and see the warming glow of the coal lighting up the words "Coal Chubby" on my stove. If anyone is thinking about getting a Chubby spend the extra money and get the "Fireview Door". You won't regret it.

Dubie, Congrats again on your install! :D

That's a nice looking install.

One thing if I may?

As it is now fly ash will quickly build up at the bottom of that elbow.

Replace it with a "T" that has a removable cap on the bottom.

This will make inspections and cleaning it out far easier.
