Here is a picture of my head backhoe operator...out at the ash pile. 30 degrees felt great until the sun went down.

I'm a little late for breakfast, but coffee and French toast sounds fantastic. Started a new job this week, so trying to get accustomed to the different procedures. No grass mowing for a while here, still bunches of snow on the ground.
Ground is frozen deeper here than it has been in past years, so anywhere there isn't snow is a slimy, greasy mess. But I'll take that over the subzero temps we've had recently.
Everyone take care out there, and Freddy...........You and Marty are in our prayers.

Hi Everyone.... I grabbed a quick tea this morning, before beginning the Honey-do list. Freddy, thanks for keeping the water hot.
Our youngest had school today! The school district is trying to catch up on so many snow days this year.
Yes, it was very sunny and warm today. Short sleeve shirt weather. After 36 hours of contstant freezing sleet and rain, the sun finally came out this morning. Perfect timing!
I idled down the DVC-500's, then went outside to tear the engine out of my Kubota Zero-turn. Time to rebuild it before the grass starts growing. Simplest engine pull I ever did! Got it onto my workbench in less than 30 minutes. After pulling Valve cover on the bad cyl, I found the intake rocker had slipped off and wore a hole thru side of valve cover. I also see blow-by from the exhaust valve stem, and I do not see a seal on it.... Hmmmm... someone has been here before.... Tomorrow I'll pull the bad head and see what the damages are. After pulling Valve cover, I found intake rocker had slipped off and wore a hole thru side of valve cover. I also see blow-by from the exhaust valve stem, and I do not see a seal on it.... Hmmmm... someone has been here before....
Stay warm.

Ewwwww, that can't be good! Me thinks the good news is that you have the know how to do the repair. This is the type of thing that makes a few boat payments for a dealer.009to090 wrote:I found the intake rocker had slipped off and wore a hole thru side of

TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEA!! TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEA!! I WANT SOME TEEEEEEEEEEA!! -- does that pass for whining like a schoolgirl Freddy? God Bless you for keeping Coffee going, even with all that you have on your plate. You are an extraordinary human being - and I mean that in a GOOD way!!
Chris, that engine looks IDENTICAL to mine, only mine is horizontally mounted with a vertical crankshaft - yours is the exact opposite ... but seems to have been built with that same Kohler "quality" .... OH almost forgot to mention - mine uses no exh.valve seals either. Must be the way it's designed.
Just finished cylinder #2 yesterday afternoon. As expected, that side was MUCH cleaner. Not a single piece of crud on the exhaust valve. Still needed some cleaning of the piston and intake valve, and both ports ... but nowhere near as bad as #1 was. Both gaskets are in - so all that's left to do is to yank the breather cover and see what's going on inside there, just to be safe. I'll update my current thread on the subject momentarily ... Latest on My Kohler CV730-0020
Yep - won't be testing it out anytime soon, as my yard looks exactly like Greg's. Got stuck on the Polaris trying to cross it the other day! Got so mad I held the throttle wide open until I got UN-stuck. Speedometer was close to 70. After that, I came inside and ordered a new set of tires. I guess I got my money's worth out of the stockers - 9 years and 1,000 hard off & on road miles.

Lookin good Smitty!
And guess what I found with my Cyl#1 ?????
You got ONE Kohler Guess...
You got it... blown head gasket. But there was more issues with cyl #1...
I am guessing here, but I bet it had a one heck-of-a backfire in the past.
So bad, the intake rocker got knocked out of position, and that's why I found a hole worm right thru the side of the rocker cover.
I am guessing here again, but The previous owner must have driven it like that for some time, with the intake valve wide open on Cyl#1. Because the PLASTIC intake manifold is all melted on the inside of the Cyl#1 side, and the gasket is shot.
Another issue... I pulled the oil breather cover and discovered the filter was completely disintegrated. It must have been the original filter, and half of it was missing. Must've slowly been ingested down the carb. Smitty, CHECK that FILTER!
But I am happy I didn't have to replace the head, valves and lifters. Just a thorough cleaning.

Good Lord! Calm down & sit still while I make some tea!SMITTY wrote:TEEEEEEEEEEA!! -- does that pass for whining like a schoolgirl
What's with the Kohler engines? Kohler used to make nothing but bulletproof small engines. Valve trains falling apart & plastic manifolds? What's this world coming too?

Maybe some bakelite on the points - that's about it!
Oh, mine doesn't have a breather filter close to the carb - it sits right on the #1 valve cover, then gets to the carb via a long hose. Blew thru with compressed air, and nothing shot out the other side, so I guess it's good. Also realized the breathers I was SUPPOSED to check are INSIDE the damn engine, in between both lifters. Well, so much for that - I ain't taking the heads off again - they've already been torqued.
Man, putting this thing back together is like a bad jigsaw puzzle - different sized bolts for everything ... some parts have to be installed FIRST, or you have to do it twice just to reach the bolt holes .... getting aggravated. Had to walk away from it last night. I managed to get the cooling shields and the exhaust headers on - that's it. Hoping to make better progress today. Got sidetracked with so much crap ... and now I can't remember where half the bolts go ...
Good thing I'm not getting paid for this job!

Fortunately, my Rocker Cover is bakelite, so I was able to JB Weld the hole closed.
Just ordered the new intake manifold. $37 with gaskets.
I wonder if the OEM replacement will be Plastic again.

Yeah I think I could bet on that one Chris.
My engine is all together - just have to continue the fight with the stupid muffler heat shields and I'll be in business. That engine will be making CO at some point today. NOT a fun machine to work on, I'll tell ya that much!!
Give her an oil change, and put it up for sale!

The Horizontal version of that engine is MUCH easier to work on.SMITTY wrote:Give her an oil change, and put it up for sale!
Buy something with a Kawasaki. Or buy something with a blown engine, and install a Kawasaki.

I think that's gonna be the plan.
I'm also avoiding Ariens, Cub Cadet, Craftsman, and low end Husqvarnas like the PLAGUE ....
