Now that's a lot of coal !!!!!

CANAAN TOWNSHIP – During frigid winter days like we’re having one state prison in Wayne County is burning lots of coal to keep the facility warm.
How much coal you might wonder?
Try upwards of 35 tons per day.
For more than 100 years, the massive prison has been atop Farview Mountain overlooking Waymart. First, it housed the criminally insane. Now, it’s a State Correctional Institute.

I don't know how to put the link up for full article if you google search and find it please post .. 35 ton of coal a day !!! Wow

The prison's 1,550 inmates and 660 staff are generally happy with the quality of heat the facility's three coal-fired furnaces provide, Ms. Fazio said, adding that even with one furnace down for maintenance, the remaining two provide enough heat for the 33 buildings on campus.
I didn't see anything about square feet..

At any rate, it seems pretty inefficient. Compared to my home, I keep 4 people warm with roughly 5 tons of coal so about 1.25 tons per person. In the prison its like 3-4 tons per person...

Sounds like a coal fired power plant.......... They use that much coal per day, I think more........... I use to know, but it's been a while. More than likely, it's bituminous coal. Some of the big power plants are built next to the mine. It saves trucking. Same with gas powered plants.

He should have said powerhouse, instead of power plant.
They mostly have a powerhouse where all three boilers are located and than the steam is sent around campus in steam tunnels.
