using central furnace blower with hitzer furnace

using central furnace blower with hitzer furnace

PostBy: yerout49 On: Thu Mar 20, 2014 8:16 am

just curious if anyone uses their central heat furnace blower in conjunction with the convection blower on the stoker furnace. I would like to have it run when the stoker blower runs. Any ideas?
I have a coal troll with a ts 2 thermostat

Welcome to the forum!

I thought I remembered somebody doing this but a quick search didn't get a hit on what was lurking in my creaky brain. I thought they had used an interposing relay set up to make it happen. Anybody else remember this?

well I have a hot air furnace, and my coal furnace all tied into one duct work system, ive tried to run my oil furnace plenum fan to "boost" my heat becuase my hotblast does not come with a very big plenum fan, it does the job but always trying something, well I found that my oil fan over powers the coal fan which actually blows back through my cold air return of my coal furnace, but I believe that is due to where I have my coal furnace tied into my duct work, if it was next to the oil furnace like suggested it might work, everything is worth a shot

I have my hitzer near my propane furnace. plenum is tied into plenum on propane furnace. I also thought I was getting over powering from that blower to the coal blower so I installed a blade damper under the coal connection at the plenum so I can pull it out some and run the propane blower with it seemed to help but at times the hitzer plenum still gets hot and is cooled once it leaves the main plenum. not sure if I am still overpowering the coal unit. but it takes about 4 hours to heat up the house in the morning just 3 or 4 degrees. I also get overshoot have it set at 68 and unit goes up to 72 or 73 before the fr starts to drop. not sure why it does that

thats about what it takes me too, but im running all manual at the moment with my hand fired, so I have found to just keep it warmer at night, seems like wasting coal at night when where sleeping but its just easier to keep it 72-74 then to drop it down to 68 at night then pick it back up, I havent really gone through any more coal, still about 50 lbs a day even with these colds temps this winter here in upstate ny (up upstate lol)

i live just south of buffalo so weather about the same. I keep the day temp set at 68 at 430 am. the night setting is 65 at 10pm. heat up is too slow in the am so I reset it to 330 and put night at 9. I am burning about a bag and a half a day.

how big of a house are you heating? 75 lbs seems like a lot to keep the house a chilly 65-68 in my opinion

Let me describe my situation, I have a 1100 sq. ft. ranch with a warm air trunk running the length of the basement (approx 32 ft. trunk). I could not put my hand fired box stove next to the oil furnace, if so I would have tied into the hot air plenum at the source. I am approx 10 ft from the oil furnace so I tied into the cold air return for a couple reasons. The coal stove blower is continually blowing hot air into the cold side of my air distribution and into the rooms above, and if for any reason the house is cool enough for the oil furnace to come on, ( it is set at 60 and rarely comes on if ever), the cold air is preheated in the system and is drawn to the oil furnace and it runs for a very short time! The coal appliance and the other heating blower do not compete or clash as HotBlast noticed, remember air has mass and the stronger blower will negate the smaller one.
Keep in mind this works for me based on my home and if I had a few grand I would have opted for stoker next to my furnace.

A lot of (most?) bagged anthracite is packaged at 40 lbs. per bag, so if that is the case this would only be 60 lbs.

Well before he said that I said I use 50lbs a day, and he said a bag and a half, so I would assume he understood that my bags where 50lb bags, or else you think he would of said 60 instead of bag and a half, but I could be wrong

Just some info on this subject. I hooked up my furnace blower to a limit switch on the supply line of my Stoker. When the temperature rises in the stoker, the furnace blower kicks on and helps to distribute the heat. If you have furnace blower with different speeds, wire it on the low speed so it wont cool down the hot air. You can also buy a thermostat that has a clean cycle, it will activate the furnace blower in cycles aiding the Stoker blower without blowing all the time.
