Alaska Channing 111 direct vent blower motor

PostBy: Pocono Pete On: Fri Mar 21, 2014 8:48 pm

I am having a problem with my Channing 111 direct vent motor. It is making a lot of noise while running, so loud that I had to shut the stove down last night. When I removed the motor from the stove and plug it in to a outlet it runs fine no noise at all. When I put the motor back on the stove it makes plenty of noise as if it is vibrating. The motor is only 4 months old and if the bearings are going I think I would hear some noise when I plug it in outside the stove. I had the motor off today three times and cleaned off the fly ash but once I put it back it makes the noise again.Has anyone else had a problem with direct vent motors or is there something I am overlooking, this noise is driving me crazy. I live in Gouldsboro, PA and am having a had time finding someone to work on a Alaska Channing 111. I called the dealer and there is at least a three week wait before someone can come out to look at it.Does anyone know someone in Wayne, Monroe or Lackawanna counties who work on Alaska direct vents. Any help or input would be appreciated. Thanks, Pete

I'll venture a guess that something is out of balance. Check the fan blades carefully & see if ash build up is clinging to the blades. Gently scrape clean & see if that helps.

I have an Alaska Gnome direct vent.
Direct vent made a scraping noise when I bought it. Turned out the fan blades were not mounted square to the shaft and it scraped the housing.

Did it just start making this noise? Was it noisy all along? When you say you took the motor off the stove, did you unbolt the motor assembly and pull out the motor and the squirrel cage that attaches to the motor?

Can you give a photo?

Well Finally had time to pull blower motor off again, I removed the motor with the fan blades connected. Blew any fly ash away with a can of compressed air there really was not much. Installed the motor and after running about 30 seconds the noise was getting even worse, the longer it ran the worse it got. When I pulled the motor again I would say something was definitely out of balance the shaft that the fan is attached to was loose and the fan would wobble when I would spin it by hand. I guess I have to get another motor from Alaska for $185.00. I will try to post a video of the sound it is making. Sorry I could not get the video to load. The noise started about a week ago, sounded like a slight rattle and continued to get louder and louder. I am assuming that the bearings on this motor went also. Thanks for you ideas, they pointed me in the right direction about it being out of balance.

On my Gnome -
Nothing needed replacement.
I just bent the fan blades ever so slightly so it looked square and was able to spin it so it was equal distance from the plate . Solved the problem.
It's made out of a soft metal.

I checked the blades on the fan and they seem fine buy when I spin the fan even at a low speed I can see the shaft has a slight movement which I am thinking causes the wobble and noise when the motor is installed. I am going to bring the motor up to the dealer I purchased the stove from, he said he would look at it and let me know what he thinks is wrong.

Sounds like the bearings in the motor "died."

Rev. Larry that's what I was thinking but I was hoping to get more than 4 months out of it. I spoke to two different people at the dealer I purchased it from, one person said there was a 90 day warranty on replacement parts another said 30 day warranty. I'll find out tomorrow when I go to the dealer he's closed on Mondays.

Well whether it's 90 days or 30 days your at 4 months which is 120 days which by my reckoning is past both the 30 and 90 day points......

I suggest you take your checkbook or your debit card with you when you go to the dealer.

Well I hope this is my last post on this thread. This morning I drove out to Woody's Fireplace in Larksville, PA expecting to have to shell out $185.00 for a direct vent blower motor, Rev Larry I did bring my debit card. I knew it was out of warranty but I was wondering exactly what was wrong and what caused the problem. I brought the old motor with me and was met at the door by Mike, Woody's son. I showed Mike the motor and he gave it a spin and looked at the motor some more and said the fan blade was definitely out of balance. He than said let me Call Alaska. He spoke to a fellow named Brian and explained I had purchased the motor Nov.22,2013 and the fan blade was out of balance, he thought it was a bearing failure. Brian told him to replace the motor under warranty. Total time in store was about 10 minutes, I think this was exceptional customer service, I would recommend Woody's Fireplace for any heating appliance, they have a nice showroom with a wide selection. Whenever I have called in the past with a question they have been extremely helpful and Alaska Stove shows that they stand behind their products. All in all needless to say when I left Woody's I was Happy, Happy, Happy! The new motor is in the stove already and the stove is lit and sounds like a stoker should, purring like a kitten
