Ranking coal

PostBy: coalnewbie On: Tue Mar 25, 2014 12:25 pm

I got a TT load of rice from Gale mining that was supposed to last more than 2 years and yes you guessed it I will need another load this summer :( . Gale is good hot coal and it was a good choice but there is a lot of ash and fly ash. So I have narrowed it down to

Jeddo
Gale (still a possibility)
Direnzo
Lehigh
any other brands that get rated.

Are there any illuminati that would like to discuss relative merits????

I've burned Jeddo a few years and was pleased with it. Can't speak for the others.

I have been burning nothing but DiRenzo nut in a handicapped box stove. Ever since changing from stove size, to nut (per Dcranes advice) I have not have any issues. Still running in the one match club this year too.

I burn about one and a half tons per year. My coal stove is my only heating source. 1200sq ft. Raised ranch, central masonry chimney. Bla, bla, bla.

I don't think you could go wrong with them.

From my experience stay away from Casey Kassa, horrible coal. I switch over to Jeddo with huge difference. Jeddo burns hotter, ash is 50% less and lighter. I now don't have to empty a full ash tub every 10-12 hrs. I'm now emptying 24 hrs with only half full tub,

Superior Coal! Use to work at Jeddo, burned it one winter. Never again! A lot of dirt, but the #8 breaker is made for wholesale distribution. Not really set up for direct sale, hence the extra fines. Thats what you get when loaded by a loader, and stock piles stacked by a loader. Coal is broken up when handled, so after it is prepared it shouldn't be constantly turned by a machine.

My first load was Gale, and the second Direnzo. The Direnzo creates much less ash, and makes the same amount of heat. I'd rate Direnzo equal to the old Harmony stuff I burned last winter.
