efm 520 rice coal. I am getting unburned coal not fines when I pull lever for fines. what is probable cause?

Yep...broken grate is likely cause. Could also be a totally shot auger pipe, but either way you need to shut it down to diagnose it.

will running it this way cause any trouble? fire is fine but fine holder fills up. thanks for all your help

Hole in pot,not hole in grate,would allow coal,not fines,into air chamber

late night post,sorry.Broken grate most likely the problem.However,I had full sized coal in my fines chamber due to a hole worn in my pot just inside of where tube ends where coal is turned upward into the burn area and grates,puzzling at first,when there were no holes in grates.Hole had worn to about the size of a quarter,I was able to have it patched,but will need to replace pot for next season.

Yeah. Also check for a hole in pipe where the auger might have worn through, inside the pot area.

I had coal which was not burnt in bin, and it turned out to be hole in upper pipe which was rusted out. It will just get bigger if you let it go. Stainless pipe fixed that problem.
