I'm Out

PostBy: Kungur On: Sun Mar 30, 2014 8:13 am

Shut down my KA-2 this AM as I used the last of my coal. I have about 5-6 tons outside in my bin but I just don't want to move it inside. I plan to give the boiler a good cleaning this week and prep it for Summer. I am going to pull the hopper off and sand the interior and coat it bedliner also will spray the interior with LDS.
Maybe warm weather will come now that the I have stopped burning!

Usually it works the other way for me. Take the plow off the truck, snowstorm two days later....shut the boiler down, bitter cold and windy for a week. If it were me, I would give the boiler a quick sweep and fire it back up for another month. Perhaps the weather is a lot milder where you are, but I have two feet of ice on the lake next to my house that will ensure cold winds well into May.

I just don't like cold nor damp & am also projecting May as a shut down date. Still got a foot of solid ice under mud down to the barn.

I'm not all too far form Chardon, OH and if I was going to shut down it would be in early to perhaps even mid May. Lots of cold weather yet to come. It might be OK if you have back-up heat and don't mind using it. But for me its a coal or nothing proposition.

Still burning here down closer to the Ohio River.

The DHW from the coal boiler is worth keeping mine running for a while longer...the standby heat loss keeps house just comfy and should it get colder at sometime the boiler will fire as needed. :)

I've got maybe 700# left in the bin. I do have close to 1000# in 5 gallon buckets in the basement that is supposed to be my emergency supply should my auger take a dump. I might tap into that and replenish it this summer I hate the thought of turning on the oil boiler. I'm running the coal boiler at 140 degrees now. Just enough to take the chill off when needed. The coal does go alot further operating like that.
