Wondering about wiring a smart thermostat to the axeman Anderson. Could this be done with the two wires alone? Not too familiar with the wifi thermostats and how they hook up, but I would like to put one in after my boiler relocation project.

You don't want a Smart Stat commanding your boiler - its for load comfort control and energy savings in the load only
You [MAY] want an outdoor reset control such as a http://tekmarcontrols.com/products/hvac-systems/256.html or maybe one of the others in the series
It depends!

The wireless thermostats I have seen require 24v power supply for the receiver. I have a Honeywell wireless unit in the upstairs of my house, it was very simple to hook up. I already had a 24v transformer installed for zone valves, so I powered the receiver from that.
If you can manage to get the thermostat wire where it is needed, a simple heat-only thermostat works very well. The old plaster and lath walls and rock hard lumber made running new thermostat wire very difficult, so I opted for a wireless unit.

It is for steam. No hydronic. I was looking at the wifi thermostat. So what you are saying is if I wore a 24v transformer to power it (c wire???), and hook up the r & w then I should be able to run it and control it through the wifi correct?
I will be investing in the automatic vents to stick on all the radiators, and also installing remote temperature detectors on both levels to monitor building temps as well. I will be making the next season an economical one. No more expensive gas bills.
Thanks for the help

Sorry -- didn't catch the fact that this was a steam system on the first round
While I have installed several of the Nest versions - and I think they are the most consumer friendly - there is a bit more drama to get them set to that friendly state of mind
Mostly I have been on sites where the install has been the Lenox smart stat - the wires are the same as the ever popular dial
Having only a basic handle of steam control - brings me to wonder if this will help or
